K9 Wont start

I posted this title earlier and someone got back to me and suggested that I check the compression releases for the clicking sound. I did and it did feel like the clicking might be coming from there. I could not find that suggestion again in the thread but if anyone saw that (or if you are the one that posted this suggestion) and can shed some light on what that may mean relative to the bike not starting that would be great.

I'm not the one. But if your releases are working then the buttons to your EHC are working. When you press the run button it will power up your ignition system. When you press the start button it will send power to the releases and the starter. The releases only stay on for a short time. The green wire at the seloniod should have power.

Do a search for starter / seloniod.
There is a set off contacts in the seloniod that can cause this problem.

so then would you say then that if the green wire has power that the starter solenoid needs to be replaced providing the battery checks out? I should also point out that the start button does not work every time. I have to play with it a lot to get the system to even click.

You can take the seloniod apart and check for broken wires and clean the contacts. First what battery did you put in the bike. Did you have it load tested? Are all the wires tight on the battery?

Hey Rottweiler, The battery is a Duracell Ultra Platinum - not the Chinese version. All the wires are tight for sure and I have not yet had the chance to load test it but that's next on the list. I have gone ahead and ordered all new controls even though I realize that the new controls may not fix the starting problem. Even with the key on and no power, the controls don't work worth a damn. The turn singles won't work half the time and even when you get them to turn on you cant turn them off. Basically, none of the controls work as they should. The bike is an 07 and only has about 3k miles on it so it sat a lot in Houston but in a climate control garage. You can see a little pitting but only on the mirrors otherwise no pitting or rust of any kind. So I'm thinking that the controls are just bad. I'm hoping that this will fix the start problem but I give it about 50/50. I've been looking for a bad ground but all that seems to be in good shape. What is so weird about all of this is the bike worked fine before it left Houston. It was in transit for about 4 weeks and it appears was well taken care of in route. My next move is the seloniod but for a bike with this low mileage seems really unusual. Shit do happen though.

The next time ya have the battery disconnected, you might pull the end plate off the solenoid (3 little screws) and check the little wires that come from the green wire terminal to make sure they are intact. I had one of those little bare wires break and it bout drove me nuts trying to figure it out. Shannon, (MrWright ), figured it out for me and got me back on the road.

Hey Mike, I have an 07 K9 too and thought I would share some experience. I would definitely change out the controls, if they are original they are crap compared to the new ones that Derrick at HDM has made. I replaced mine a couple of years ago for the same issues you are having and haven't had a problem since. As far as the battery goes, I would get rid of that Duracell and get a Deka battery for it. You can buy a Deka or get a softail battery from the Harley Shop as they are made by Deka. I trust the experts on this site @MrWright, @knothead @theinfamous and that is their recommendation for a battery on a BigDog. Some will argue but since i started using Deka batteries i have not experienced an issue one with any of my bikes. Matter of fact, I had this issue on my bagger a couple of weeks ago. Hit the start and nothing, turn signals wouldn't work nothing. Checked the battery and all looked good voltage wise, 13 volts but wouldn't start, no spin at all. The battery was a couple of years old so I went to the Harley shop and got a new one, put it in and she went right back to work. You are in the right place to get your K9 running again....best of luck

This was my issue to, a very nice gentleman by the name of Mr. Wright gave me a call One Afternoon and told me what to look for and how to fix it, I was riding my Chopper 30 minutes later.
Get on his good side, he is one of many Saviors that have personally helped me.
