RETIRED
I know this has to be more frustrating that watching a kid learn to play piano but there are not a lot of BDMs out there and I'm juggling learning about the years/models while searching.:(

Everyone's patience is appreciated.

A few more days and I'm gonna have to barrow some:)

haha...

At the end of the day the bike is 12 years old...if it's low mileage it will need maintaince cause the original owner probably did the minimum.

Also, are you willing to wrench on it? You mentioned towing it to a shop. Some places won't work on these bikes and it's not because it's hard they just don't. So if your not gonna wrench make sure you have a reputable shop in your area.

It's very tough for anyone to make the right call on this because not once through this topic has anyone asked you about your current bike for trade. If he was to sell it outright for around 9200 to 9500 then based upon other sales, it's a very good deal. The issues you made mention of are normal. The front brakes, take the two screws off the master, fill with fluid (because it's very low), crack the bleeder and allow it to gravity bleed. Air will come out. Continue to fill as the level is going down. 2 people needed to do this. One filling and the other watching. Your lever will be completely different and right up at the top when you grab it.

TP heads, lots of guys had very good luck with them. S&S are less susceptible to issues.

P.S. I've seen this bike floating around for sale a while ago.

Is that a 2006???

Mine is a 2005 Chopper and I have the same wheel design. I bought my bike used last year knowing nothing about bigdog's and I'm still riding it......it's got the TP covers and whatever other "bad" stuff it came with but I figure if it breaks I'll deal with it. I developed a problem on the road and thanks to the good graces of Mr and Mrs Wright was put back on the road. You won't find a better bunch of people than this Bigdog family. Good luck on your search...

I just recently bought a Big Dog. Mine had a front brake and clutch issue too. It turned out that the front brake calipers and master cylinder both needed a rebuild which doesn't cost much in parts and is very easy to do yourself. The clutch was out of adjustment but also needed a few screws tightened and some Dremel tool work to smooth out some metal.

I say adjust the clutch on site to see if that is the issue and negotiate the cost of the brakes rebuild into the deal (I'd personally rebuild them anyway because that rubber is likely original in there).

The 05 Chopper can be loaded with issues. It was not there best year of QA. The TP boxes have the wrong geometry so the rockers are sliding on the valves and wear them out. My valve guides were shot at 3k. My pistons were gunked up with oil. You can see the mark on top of the valve stem. Also clutch was improperly installed at the factory, missing spacer and nut not installed correctly. Apparently common in 05. Not trying to dissuade you, just don't overpay because there will be work to do. You will likely need a new EHC for $500 in the near term.

The stock 05 motor is also fairly anemic. Many had EPA restricted valves, undersized carb and a restrictor plate behind the intake manifold and could use a cam upgrade. You are limited to the 585 cam unless you upgrade the valves and springs.

If you remove the restrictor plates you will need to find spacers to replace them behind the intake manifold. If you upgrade the carb you will need a new manifold and can eliminate the spacers.

If I had it to do over I would get a 2006 which came with S&S rockers or a K9 which benefits from a larger gas tank. 4.4 vs 3.8.

Sorry to bust ur bubble. But it's a 2005 chopper. Nice bike for sure. U should be between 7500 to 8500 on that for purchase price. All them issues could be simple fixes. But as stated, these bikes need attention and u will have to be competent enough to do so. There are a lot of people on here who are more then happy to help. When I got my bike I knew very little on doing any engine work. I now can take my engine completely apart and do almost anything to her. ALL from a guy here and a guy there from this forum helping. Good luck on your decision

My '05 Chopper must be one of the exceptions. Bought it new and I have only 8005 miles on it
OIher than a small oil leak, no issues! Just not riding much. Asking $8500. Never damaged.

SO my 04 Chopper the front brake works I mean I can slow down with it, and it will make the forks compress, but I swear it brakes like shit... always wondered if I needed new pads or what.

Also front brake when using it makes a weird noise like a buzzing/tick
