Jetting Carb

Hey Everyone!

Looks like it’s riding season again here in PA. I posted a thread on Glowing Pipes last year and I think I’m going to take Gas’s advise and try and rejet my carb myself. I have a set of Trotta D-2 and K&N air cleaner. Other than that, the bike is stock. The plugs are white and I have popping on decal.

I was going to start with a 32 int and 78 main. That was the recommendation from Trotta. I’ve been reading that I may need to do something with the air bleed also. Is this something I need to worry about?

What jets do you have now? .032 INT &.078 main good starting point.with those pipes,Do you have baffles? Your decel popping works of the Intermediate circuit,I found that if you open your mixture screw turn to left 1/2 turn too 1 full turn to left it will help out alot on decel popping.Your stock setting is about 1 1/2 out move it too 2 -0r 2 1/2 out to left.

Is it making power up to redline? Don't sweat the decel popping too much, short pipes will just do that. Torque cones will help. You said you had glowing pipes?

If your plugs are white you are running lean. If you have a S&S carb. it should have come with good directions on how to jet and set idle mixture which yes is important. If you do not have this you can go on line and print it out, or I called and they send me a copy, I live in southeastern PA, Fawn Grove I would be glad to help you if you need help. your intermittent jet is used most of the time normal riding, the main jet is more for hard accelerations, and the idle has to do with starting, idling and also some normal running.

Im not sure what the jets are that I currently have. I wanted to order them prior to tearing anything apart. I posted around October regarding the glowing pipes. I noticed when changing the fluids and warming it up in the garage the pipes near the heads were red hot. Everyone was in agreement that i was running lean. So...im not too familar with working on motorcycles but with the help of this site i successfully changes a broken cluthc cable. I guess i could give this a shot. The main air bleed was something I wasn;t sure about.

rejetting is very simple, you dont even have to pull the carb, just drop the bowl, have fun and learn, you will feel good when your done because you did it yourself,i run martin bros pipes,no baffles,i use a 31/78,my air bleed hasnt been touched,i heard some say they did, good luck:cheers:

You guys are right as usual! I changed the jets on my bike. Very simple. The jets that were in were 29.5 int and 74 main. Form what I heard these are original. Therefore the guy that put my pipes on never changed the jetting like he said. So...now I have a 32 int. and a 76 main. I still need to take it for a ride and see how the plugs look. But do I need to readjust the carb as expained in the post from the gas man? When I started it in the garage it seems to be very responsive when giving it gas.

There are no baffles. I follow the procedure outlined on here to adjust the carb. As far as running it to redline...Im not sure about that. MAybe a stupid question but what gear would i be in when attempting to redline?...

The glowing pipes were noticed while warming it up to change the oil last fall. I was in the garage and it was darker in the gargage. thats how i noticed the pipes were red hot. I haven;t noticed them since then. The conditions arent quite the same as they were last time.

Went out yesterday to do a plug burn. When i pulled the plug after riding a few miles @2500rpm I noticed one small area that was black on the porcelin. When I pulled the plugs after riding it at 3000RPM the black mark was gone but the plugs are still on the white side, in my opinion. I currently have a 32 int. and 78 main. When adjusting the carb, I have the accellerator pump screw out about two turns. MAybe a hair more. I was thinking I would go up to a 33 int. and 80 main. Any thoughts?

Thanks for all your help.

06 Ridgeback - BDM suggest with Vance and Hines (more restrictive than what you have) to run 76 main and 31 inter. I did this for years and worked well. I later boosted the cams to 600 with the same jets.

With respect to de-accel popping - Run up one pull and roll off the throttle to make it pop. Turn the idle mixture about 1/4 out - do another run, repeat, repeat.

Later I added Trotta's D2's - you will always have de-accel popping - with D2 - period. To mitigate it, I drilled some holes in the rear and made some home made baffels using the old trick of a washer welded to a screw that could be turned to vary the amount of back pressure. Worked OK - but still did not care for them as much as the old V&H so later I went back to V&H and added a Mikuni carb - seems to be the best set up.

You can keep trying the idle mix screw and as far as jetting goes - S&S says the range is
Main - from 74 to 86
Inter - from 32 to 36
