Indian Chief

Anyone own an Indian Chief 2009? Curious what you think. I was in a local Inidan/Big Dog dealer to check out the dogs and couldn't help but to notice the Indians - they look pretty cool and you can equip them for long rides with shield and bags or easily pull the extra stuff off for a local ride which makes the bike look pretty cool. I have been thinking about a new Street Glide Screemin Eagle and will say that I think the Indian looks nicer - its larger which for me is a plus and has more chrome. It is also more unique - don't see that many on the road. They are pricy but so is the Screamin Eagle.

Hey BDWD, I have a whole thead on Indian following it since there last closure. I like the new designs they have and the traditional look. Hope they make it this time around.

Guess you survived the big cuts your company made huh???

Take care,

As Alhall said... its hard to plunk down $30k on a bike that you're not even sure the brand will be around in a year.

I say buy the standard HD SG and if you just have that extra $10k burning a hole in your pocket, spend it on the SG. Do a 113 stage 3 kit, flashy paint, and chrome. Be way better off.

Ray - links not working for me??

Gas - ya that's what I'm thinking about - not really crazy about the Screamin Eagle paint job anyway - I like the plain black but would like to give it a little more power, etc... Add some Chrome over time.....

I just checked out the Indian web site. They are definitely cool looking bikes but, in my opinion, over priced. If you like the look you can buy a Harley and modify it for a lot less money. Harleys' are reliable and you know they'll be around for many more years. Indian's are cool bikes but it's the vintage ones that catch my attention.

Indian or Harley?

This is going to come down to attitude more than anything. Can you buy a Road King for less than a New Chief? "Absofreakinloutley!" You should also opt for the Screamin Eagle big orange marker flag on a stick so that when you go to bike night you can find your Road King amongst the other 4,952 ones just like it there. Why do we ride? Why do we own motorcycles? Why do we brave the rain, the heat, the idiots trying to run over us? It is simply about the freedom to choose to do our own thing within an environment of "flying on two wheels". The Chief is a high dollar purchase for sure, but have you looked at one next to a H.D. It is quite fairly like comparing a Toyota to a Lexus. Or a Timex to a Brietling. They all do the same damn thing! The Chief is mechanically superior without a doubt. The front end is from Paolli, the air filter is a K&N, the rear shock is from Fox, the brakes and standard hydraulic clutch are from Brembo, the gearbox is a Baker 6 speed, all of the lines and cables are steel braided, the rims are tubeless, the exhaust is stainless, do I need to go on. There is a reason Lexus and Mercedes sell product to discerning customers. It is simply because they are intelligent enough to be discerning. Before you start throwing rocks me about this post I dare you to do 2 things. First, test ride a new Chief. Second think really hard about this," Why don't we all drive 4 cylinder minvans?" Regarding the financial soundness of Indian vs. H.D. take a close look at the number of people H.D. has just laid off and the number of factories they have closed. Anybody wanna buy M.V. Augusta, its the latest H.D. asset to go on the chopping block. Ask Eric Buell about the stability of H.D.

Momma always told me, " Vinny, Don't argue with stupid poeple!" but somtimes I can't resist.

Soapbox Vinny out!

Vinny relax a little - this thread wasn't meant to be controversial. Agree with you that we all have different perspectives on what we like. I like lots of bikes including the metrics - love the Harleys even though they are common, etc.. I had not seen a new Indian upfront until the day I posted this thread so wanted to get others opinions. It is the first cruiser that really fit we well (or as well as a stock bike will fit me). The dealer had a Screamin eagle sitting next to it that looked very small in comparison. I will not likley do anything - not ready to trade my Dog yet - but if I was this would be a bike that I would look at and do a deeper dive around the viability of the manufacturer and what happens for parts if they go belly up, etc... I hope they make it - it is nice to have lots of options as well as seeing different types of bikes on the road.

Ray - link works now - thanks!!

I would think long and hard before going over a 103 in a twin cam.

I have learned the hard way on that one.
Yeah well, with the extra cash and if your desire is all about the power. I think you can get a complete Jims TC with trans and primary for $12k. There was a dealership in Michigan that would do it to the new bike. And for that price you also got your complete new drivetrain back to you. The new Jims drivetrain came complete with a 3 yr warrenty and everything.

When I spoke to the girl at Jims for the built 131 engine they only warrantied it for a year.

The Jims engine does not use the stock cases, so it might be OK. With The increased cylinder bolt circle it might have better control of the cylinders, keeping them from moving during the heat cool cycles.

For sure, whatever you do, get the timken conversion and the crank trued and welded.

I had mine welded, but the runout now is almost at the limit. There is some confusion at the shop as to if mine were trued before welding. I don't think they were. The assembly was a new SE part, so I doubt they could have been to far out if they were any at all.

When I priced it out, I think the engine was at $9k with diamond cut cylinders and a welded crank.

Still might be an option for me. Not sure WTF is going to happen with my bike. GRRRRRRR. :bang:

.

I was on the Indian web site a short while ago and really dig them. I love the flat paints, and the army green on the Bomber.
