TRUE COLORS COLLISION
I have read the how to by jake on the replacing of a sportster type switch on our bikes but however i am not clear on a few things and would like some answers first if its possible........
1. why would we want to switch to this switch instead of what comes with our bikes?isnt the oem switch low voltage and this other one high voltage??

2. if we do switch over to a different kind of switch wouldnt that affect the allready tempermental electronics of this bike??

3.i am not able to follow the how to guide cause the the first picture shown is exactly the switch i have ,then go down to picture 7 and its a completely different switch installed, that allready has the wires attached..i want to know exactly how to wire the first switch with 3 prongs comin off it ,and i have absolutely no inclination on where the wires connect to and from....

4. our oem switch has 2 wires comin off it and the new switch has 3,.....why is this????

i am in no way electrically inclined,so to spell this out would be like how they make them books about computers "windows for dummies"...if anyone could help me i surely would appreciate it.....thanks

I may be wrong here Jimmi but I think on all 04 and later as long as you are still running the EHC you have to keep the low voltage BDM switch.

In Jakes sportster switch thread he has already replaced his EHC with the Wire Plus unit.

Yeah Jimi, from what I understand, when you ditch the EHC and go to the Wire Plus setup, you have to change your ignition switch because the stock BDM switch cant handle it. But I am sure Jake will be along soon to give you a better, precise answer.

I asked night train this same question when changing out my BDM switch to a 12 volt style switch. He told me it makes no difference.

The 3 post switches are for the older bikes that use to run headlights off.

Off
Bike ON with no headlight
Bike ON with headlight on

For you, run your EHC on the 2nd post.
Leave the 3rd one empty or use it for something like LEDs or some other assc.

You can switch to a standard switch without the wire plus system. I ran a drag specialties ignition switch when I swapped out my coils and motor mount long before I did the wire plus change with no issues at all.

1. why would we want to switch to this switch instead of what comes with our bikes?isnt the oem switch low voltage and this other one high voltage??

You only need to swap out to this higher voltage (12volt) switch after doing the Wire-Plus EHC swap. The Stock switch is 3 volt designed for the BDM EHC only. If you hooked the BDM low voltage switch directly up to the Wire-Plus module, or installed it in any other bike for that matter, it would burn up. If your stock switch went bad, and you still have the stock EHC, I'd buy a stock BDM ignition switch to replace it.

2. if we do switch over to a different kind of switch wouldnt that affect the allready tempermental electronics of this bike??

Switching over to the sportster style switch while running the BDM EHC will still work, but I have not done it myself. I have seen others do it in the past.

3. i am not able to follow the how to guide cause the the first picture shown is exactly the switch i have ,then go down to picture 7 and its a completely different switch installed, that allready has the wires attached..i want to know exactly how to wire the first switch with 3 prongs comin off it ,and i have absolutely no inclination on where the wires connect to and from....

You may want to read the instructions and not just try to follow the How-To by just looking at the pictures. :) I show two different switch installs in that how to, if you read it all. A standard generic sportster switch (wires pre-soldered on th back) and the Wire-Plus sportster switch (3 screw terminals on the back). Most every switch I have ever looked at or bought comes with wiring instructions or with the connections printed on the terminals. The Wire-Plus switch has three screw terminals on the back labeled as such: B - Battery, L - Lights, IG - Ignition. If your running the Wire-Plus module, it is labeled in those instructions what wires hook to what. If your running the stock EHC, Hook one orange wire to B and one to IG.

4. our oem switch has 2 wires comin off it and the new switch has 3,.....why is this????

Sportster style switches are available in two position and three position styles. A two position switch is ON & OFF. A three position is OFF, ON with no lights, & ON with lights.

Hope that helps:2thumbs:

Maybe it's just me, but I think it looks cheap and silly, and wouldnt ever put that shit on my bike. I like the idea, but needs to be MUCH smaller and inconspicuous. Maybe a hinged door to conceal the key pad.
