I think I f'ed up my chrome, beyond repair?

If your fumbling along you might try hose claps to hold in place, tighten only as much as needed . Then put your stainless zip ties on and remove hose clamp(s)
But yes you soak wrap in water and put it on wet, tight as possible.
I also found works best with pipe off bike and stabilized so you can use both hands to wrap.

Here is my 03 Chopper with black wrap .
There was no heat shields and pipes were blued some. I'm told this pipe set never had shields available. I decided to do this as a possible fix instead of new pipes. I am happy with the outcome at this point. This did help insulating them if you have a momentary bump or contact.
And BTW there is paint/dye for the wrap.
Don't power wash them, blows pigment off and will fray the fabric. My wrap kit came with the stainless ties.
I forgot to mention it added 20 hp LMAO

Close to that. I didn't measure the distance. Mine is under the heatshields to help protect the paint on the side cover

What I think I'll do is go to the home Depot and get those heavy duty clamps that you tighten with a wrench/flathead, same as the ones that were used to secure the heat shield,
that should secure the tape on tightly at the front end and the back end
and then, every 6 in in between
I'll place the flimsy aluminum ties just to hold the wrap in place,
now the question is:
as the pipes get hot (since they tend to seize everything else up), would the tape now adhere to the pipes after a few dozen highway miles?

They gonna smoke for a while. Paint curing with the heat and any crap in the wrap burning off. Not a concern. The stainless zip ties usually included with the wrap do hold. They kinda of a pia to work with tho.
