Since your talking complete teardown I can only think of some larger sockets and an air impact for the primary removal. Make sure you have a manual. As stated pay close attention to any transmission shims and there location. Stripping the powder coat is best done by an acid dip that costs around $125.00. Make sure powder coater leaves the trans and motor mount areas masked off. Now on assembly you may need a few more items as I would take the opportunity to replace neck, wheel and any other bearings and races. I would also replace the trans seal and maybe the front crank seal. These extras will require a few more special tools.

Al,
Where can one find a place to acid dip?
I am looking to remove the powder coating off my original rims that I did last winter. I am going to try some aircraft removal to see if it will soften it up so I can remove it but rather take it somewhere to have it done...

Neil, check with your local platers or polishers. We have one here local that comes recommended by most powder coaters in the area. I hate to see you pay for shipping for a set of wheels but let me know. I understand they use sulfuric acid but no water in the mix. I did some searches on the internet and it may be something you could try yourself but the hassle is how to get rid of the waste legally. Here's something I found.

Hey Neil, I used a place in Clarksville once (about 5-6 yrs ago) to strip and powdercoat some wheels, frame and a few others things. It was called Hard Shell Powercoating. I know they are not at their same location as when I used them. I am not sure if they closed up shop, or just moved locations. They did good work. You might wann try looking them up.

Joe,
They were bought out by Lee Black who did the rims in the first place and the headlight bucket that I have never been able to use seeing how they powder coated the bezel threads too. One of the guys who use to work for them said they use aircraft stripper to get off powder coating. Which ever way the stuff comes off I will let everyone know. Thanks for the heads up anyway..

I am also powder coating my frame, just got the frame ready for the powder coater in the morning. Did anyone use these Kimball Midwest: Product Catalog Really good.:2thumbs: Black Ball was blasting the frame for me all day he didn‘t get all the paint off & his dad said to try them. Black Ball said that he had wished he would have used them first. They get the paint off really fast without damaging the metal

It can be done... I did it.

Dont just settle for media blasting. It leaves dimples in the powder that sometimes can be seen on the next layer. You want a smooth surface to apply the new powder. This can only be achieved 100% thru chemical stripping.

As far as stripping, here's who I used. Good prices too.
