Are you hard on the ole dog sometimes? Tell your story.

This could be do you run it at the strip on a regular basis. Drag racing. Or you've done dyno drags or built a really juciced up motor. Could be you go to rally's in hot stop and go traffic, or maybe ride it several hundred miles at a time. Perhaps you do some bar hopping with your buddy's on the weekend where you romp on it a little for short runs turning it on and off about the time it cools down your back on it doing a little 2nd 3rd gear joust with your pals.

Tell a little about your machine your routine and riding style.

If you are a little rough on the ole dog explain how and what you do to keep it maintained and in good working order.

Now please don't take offense to this I know these are a special breed of bike and should be well taken care of.

I certainly don't think these are race bikes or something that should be abused.

I'm more looking for a testimony of riding conditions stress levels and what to be mindful of when and if you may or may not decide to do so.

So again please understand I'm not trying to be disrespectful to you the owner or to your dog. If you have a story big or small please share. Thanks!:)

I have a garage queen, its like that car you only take out on sunny Sundays, when there's no chance of rain, I will get it out, I like to ride, but I don't live to ride.:whoop: Its all about comfort for me when I go somewhere, I don't like to get wet, I don't like to get cold and I certainly don't wanna cook on the road when its in the upper 90's :old2:
So why did I get a Dog, cause I liked the looks of it:oldsmile:

I got an old "junkyard" Dog. I ride it like I stole it most of the time. My riding buddies always cussing me cause they say I ride too fast for em....HD's struggle to keep up. I understand the "garage art" some like to have, but I bought this Dog to ride. But they are just hotrods, so its always time to fix something and as a bonus, I got a hardtail. What do I gotta fix or replace today? She's paid for so I don't give a rats fat ass who says what about her. I'll never sell her either, may get her a new roomie someday tho...

I just want to make sure, when we say "dogs" are we talking about our motorcycles (I would certainly hope not!) or wives? I couldn't be sure from the context.

Just wanted a big motor and a bike with style and attitude. Nothing better than 2,000-2,500 rpm sound lumbering down the road. Never abuse it. Agree with all responses and like Dent said V-twins are tractor motors. If I wanted something to abuse I would have kept my dirtbike or rocket.

I buy vehicles to use, not to sit and be pretty. Of course I want them to look good and run good, so I perform regular maintenance as needed. However, I want to spend my time ON my bike, not working on it. I ride it daily, except when something is broke and I can't afford to fix it. It's not a race bike, I'd buy a Hybussa if I wanted true speed, but I don't baby it either. I've ridden my entire life, wore HD patches on my jean jacket as a kid... rode Honda's most of my life... when all my brothers in the Minotaurs in Hawaii were riding HD's and BD's, I was still on a Honda, but LOVED the BD's. When Honda pulled production out of the U.S., I dumped my bike and made the move. I got my Mastiff because it's American, beautiful and like I often say... you can get somewhere, or you can "arrive" somewhere. On the BD, I arrive... it's just a different ride.

Brian (midstate68), Gary (sniper) and I, ride like the Blue Angels fly. When we mount our Dogs it's a minimum of 60 miles that we ride.
When we do a lunch ride, we leave early in the morning, and sometimes we have to eat supper on the way home.
How hard on the bike are we you ask? We race each other at least two or 3 times each time where out. Our pegs are ground off from tight curves, along with some frame paint. We ride, and we ride hard, but we also take time to love on our bikes. Maintenance is just as much fun as riding. We spend long hours, cleaning, fixing oil leaks when they accrue, checking bolts, etc.
I tear mine completely down every two years, to repaint and polish the aluminum out, and rebuild anything that need it.
Don't be afraid to ride it, and ride it hard.

Looking forward to retirement
I ride mine at least 2 times a week ( THERAPY) and no, I do not abuse it. Yes I run 70-85 on Interstate but these are not drag bikes. If I wanted a drag bike I would have dropped a S&S 145 into a HD Sportster with a Jims transmission. These bikes are like fine wine, you savor the ride and enjoy them, you just do not chug it!

I get more enjoyment at cruising on back roads at 60-65mph than anything else. I've seen more of rural Texas in the last 6 years than most who have lived here their whole life.

I'll run 80 on the highway but I try to avoid highways if at all possible. Even on 1000 miles+ I won't step on an interstate.

I do a big mileage trip once a year, and if I don't have time to ride 100 miles it's rare I leave the garage. The bar I go to the most on my bike is 96 miles away! Part of the reason I don't ride under 100 is I live in a city and to get outside of Dallas is 20-30 miles already. If I lived in a rural area I could see more short trips.

I'm a firm believer that your vehicles no matter what it is car bike tractor atv etc will treat you as well as you treat it with that being said I ride mine normal get on it once in a while but never bounce the rev limiter that's just stupidity v twins are not high rpm motors and clean and inspect it after every ride but that's just me
I put 210k on a S&S 107 with only replacing the head gaskets once at 180k. As long as you take care of the motor it will take care of you. Anything over 5k is just plain bad for the bike. If ya want to do that buy a rocket....

I just like to ride it. I like the way it looks and I like the way it sounds. I especially love the brotherhood with the people of common interest. I do like to do the bar hopping thing from town to town and checking out the little towns to see what they have. My wife like it when I find little antique shops and good places to eat. I like working on the Dog and cleaning it and adding a few parts here and there. As far as the throttle, I do like to crack the throttle from time to time maybe more often than l should. Mostly I just love to ride it and show it off.;)

You couldn't of said it better as far as I'm concerned:)

In the Potters hand...
This is my first v-twin coming from sport bikes. I like to ride it mostly because everyone else doesn't have one, and it's fast, and it's loud, and it's low. I crack the throttle every now and then, but with no rpm gauge or speedo, I'm going on sound and feel only. Fun fun fun

Looks like some of us have calmed down, :)I just like to putt around the speed limit + 10 to 15, get on it once in a while but also like having a clean DL. Avoid the Interstates as much as possible and at 67 I don't need to prove anything to anyone. Chance of rain it stays in the garage and I take the truck, real long ride I hook up the trailer and could care less what anyone thinks.

;)I like to do little stop light burst from time to time very rarely ever ride over the speed limit no matter where I am. Cops are thick around here and I don't like to give my money away. I like making noise looking cool and showing off a little. All under the speed limit of course.

I guess at times I've been like everyone else, every story I read I can identify with. I love to cruise polish on my toys and romp on them every once in a while. I've got several toys so sometimes I get tired of working on them :p And would rather just cruise and take it easy on them to avoid the wrenching. :D

I'll say this too I love the way a v-twin sounds when they are winding out just a cool cool sound.

I know I know these engines are not designed for high rpm. Still music to my ears....

Like an WWII Allison or rolls Royce air craft engine, a big block v-8 at 7,000 rpm or a little sbc at 9,500 in a nascar. I love the way a crotch rocket sounds pegged out too!! Ever been to a top fuel event WOW amazing to see and hear.

I have a love and respect for all hot rods from WWII aircraft (the original hot rod) all the way down to our bikes.
