Highway RPM

After a few days of gazing at the vintage- took it out on the highway... '93 FLSTC been my ride for years. Has the stock EVO with 61 tooth rear pulley. My dog has only a tach but I'm running 3500 rpm or so at what I'm guessing is 70 mph. My vintage has a 70 tooth rear pulley and the S&S 80" motor. The S&S has a much broader power band and seems it likes the higher RPMs. Question is I'm not used to hearing the pitch of those pipes am I safe on the road all day at this RPM?
Thanks

You may be closer to 80 mph at that rpm with the doggie. You can run all day long at 3500...Some guys on here cruise at 90-100 mph and my guess is they are up around 4000 +

IMHO

Most dogs run 80 mph at about 3000 rpm. Put a gps on your bike to get accurate numbers. My triumphs will run all day at 4500 rpm. My Daytona 675 cruises at 7,000 rpm with red line being 14,000 rpm. It's fun to ride anywhere above 7,000 rpm. You do experience less engine wear if you stay below 3750 rpm on most engines not designed to run at high rpm long term.

Looking forward to retirement
I am going to break down after Sturgis and Put a Dakota Tach & Speedometer set up om my doggie!

Sounds like a good idea. Looking at them myself. Currently have an autometer 5" tach with shift light. Have to do some research to see if it will install on my 96 vintage

If you know anyone who has a hand held gps for hunting or hiking you can throw it in your pocket. Most of them save the max speed so roll it up to 3500 rpm and check it when you get home. I rode an old sportster for a couple years without a speedo or tach.

We cruize at about 95mph all day long on the newer RSD bikes. In my video here it's hard to tell from my handheld camera but the 3500 rpm lit comes on at about 95 mph. 3000 at just over 80. Been a long time since I've had an S&S 80 inch motor but you are safe at this rpm. Our owners manuals even states not to use 6th gear till you are up at this range of rpm.

Oh, and my motor has over 91,000 miles on it now! :)
