High milage Dog's

I currently have a built Harley Street Glide. It seems that every 10-15k miles something goes south on it.

I am talking about the engine here. I am at 30k and they are tearing into the engine for the 4th time.

At first it was a 113 screaming eagle build. Currently it is an axtell 117 build.

I rented an 05 Big Dog chopper this past summer. I really liked it. It was getting way better gas mileage than my SG. I put on a couple of hundred miles on it in one day and was surprised at how good it felt and performed.

So my question is how many of the 117 engines have more than 50k miles on them? Other than the electronic module did you have any issues with the engine?

I ride my bike every day. I expect what I ride to be reliable. Would I be happy owning a Big Dog?

Here is a link you my current ride:

There are a few guys on here that have some high mileage on a dog. They can be temperamental at times so keep that in mind. I personally wouldnt trade mine even with the few minor problems I had. She left me stranded when the clutch nut backed off which seems to be a comon problem, but minor. When in the office I ride mine everyday to work unless it is raining when I get up. As for field work (travel alot for work) I trailer it and the rest of my equipment and ride every chance I get. I put almost 4k on mine in about 3 months, not as much as some but more than others. Best of luck in your decision and welcome to the site, Where ya from?

I put 24,000 on my 03 that had the 107" motor. I really liked that motor.
I have over 56,000 miles on my 05 Chopper now and never had a motor problem with either of them or tranny problem.

Hope to put on another 20,000 this year.
Most of my miles came from commuting 100 miles a day when I was stationed in kalifornia.

Welcome to BDB,
Ray

I am from Richardson, Texas.

It is a subbie of Dallas.

My commute is about 30 miles one way, mostly freeway.

I ride if it is not raining on the ride in and if there is a 50% or less chance on the way home.

I do not care how cold it is (I cheat, I have gerbings heated gear) as long as there is no ice forecasted.

The one I rented was having electrical issues, the clutch was slipping and the final belt was way to tight.

The guy looked at me funny when I turned the bike in and told him that. I guess their normal clients were not versed in the way of the hot rod.

Overall, the rental chopper kept me sane after driving a rental minivan to the coast. :(

So what mods have you done to your 05 chopper?

My SG is in the shop again. The cylinders are scorred again after 2500 miles since the last time this happened......I am not happy.

Nothing except remove the restrictor plates, change air cleaner and exhaust. Oh, I had my carb modified by xXx!

Run Amsoil and change every 5000 miles or so (yes don't send the oil police after me!) and just ride.

Just turned 50,000 miles on my '05 Chopper!

At about 45,000 I had the restrictor plates removed, changed to the Bassani exhaust and swapped out the carb with the modified Triple X. Have had no issues with the engine or anything in the drivetrain. Also running synthetic oil, usually Amsoil but occasionally Revtech.

Damn Jeff, I better get hot this year or you will catch me. Nice to have that year round riding weather. I miss it but not the big citys and traffic. Do miss the "lane sharing" though!

Yeah Raywood, the "lane sharing" sure comes in handy while commuting to work! Never need to be stuck behind some idiot taking their time in the left-most lane and blocking traffic. As for the big cities and traffic, we usually ride on the weekends away from the cities, and either end up at the coast or the Calistoga area. It's all good!

That's some nice country around the Calistoga area! You know a was stationed at Mare Island for 13 yrs and lived in Napa. I bought my first Harley at the Fairfield HD dealership in 81.
I'll be back there this summer so we will have to hook up.

Restrictor plates?
Yes, when the 05's were introduced they were a whole different bike. They included the new SSW motor from S&S. They had the new DD6 Baker transmission with his new DSSC primary system (albiet proprietary to BDM though!) as well sas the new EHC dual plug system.

Since they were producing more motorcycles per year they were hit with new EPA standards so they introduced the 05's with "restrictor plates" in the manifold that were easy to remove and "E" carburators vice the "G" carbs that were common prior and after 05.
It was later learned that they didn't need to use the restrictor plates and "E" carb to meet EPA requirements so only the 05's were affected.

So most with 05's have removed the restrictor plates and some have upgraded to the "G" carb.
I didn't feel I needed the "G" carb so had mine modified by Triple X who bored it out and did their magic to it.

Still a good motor yet lots on here talk about the dog year 05 but I think dyno test proved that they are just as powerful and torquey as the 06 and newer.
Here is a pic of the restrictor plates.
Left side picture has the restrictor plate under the spacer plate there replaces it.

18K and 1 week until it's 1

Yep, 1 week 'til the Mastiff turns 1 y.o. and I'm over 18k right now.

Problems:
- replaced blinker switch (warranty)
- replaced speedo (twice) (warranty)

Zero down time, runs perfect.

My pulley is worn and BD says they won't cover a worn pulley... I thought that was pretty shitty since it's not even a year old. Other than that.... FANTASTIC.

I put 15K on an '06 K9 and so far just rolled over 20K on my '08 K9. Few issues with the '06 but that didn't stop me from going with BDM again last summer. No problems with this one at all. Mechanically I've only changed out the exhaust & air cleaner on this one. I wouldn't hesitate to ride a Big Dog across the country, I believe they are about as solid of a bike that can be put together.

seems to me the bikes that run the best with far less issues are the ones that are actually being ridden. i have always thought the more you ride it the better it gets myself.with all my bikes. i noticed a lot of those that have minor or major issues have very little miles or usage out of their bikes other than parking lot pimping. maybe maybe not. but just an observation.
