Hi/Low HID (H4, 55 watt)

I put this same info in another thread, but I think this is a good enough idea to post it on its own.

I recently purchased a 55 watt Bi-Xenon HID with a power supply the same size as Jakes low beam HID (Jakes is 35 watts). The downside is the rear of the bulb. It's longer than a standard H4. This means that the power supply has to be outside the bucket. I think it can be hidden in the area between the 2 tank halves. I just need to make a longer high voltage cable for it. For anyone interested, the 55 watt dual (HI/LOW HID motorcycle kit ran me about $65 (yes, that's right, no misprint). check out the website. Great prices and products.

Let me know if anyone else is liking a hi/low HID kit as well. They offer a 55 watt H4, or 35 watt H4 (both bi-xenon (hi/low HID). AND they offer the same type deal as Jakes HID kit (small regular bulb as high beam and a 35 or 55 watt HID).

If you use the same kind of bulb as Jakes (low beam HID and high beam 35 watt halogen), you can get the 55 watt ballast in our bucket. The bonus is that if you are using a BDM EHC, the 55 watt HID pulls about the same amperage as the stock halogen bulb. Should mean better EHC compatibility.

I checked the price on a 55 watt HID with the small halogen hi beam and it's $50.00 with 14.95 shipping.

To duplicate what Jake is selling is only $42.50

Jake, not intentionally undermining your business, but a good deal is simply a good deal. I suggest you invest in the HI/LOW HID and you make the mods to the high voltage lead, maybe a under tank mounting bracket and resell it.

Thanks for the info Richard! I'll be checking these out. I'm not worried about EHC compatibilty because I plan to install it with its own power supply directly from the battery. Everything I read tells me a HID should not turn on while the vehicle is starting but turned on after the vehicle is running. Plus, it never made any sense to me to have a halogen high beam with an HID low beam...

With a HID low beam, you will never need a high beam. It lights up the road already. I love Jakes kit. My best mod for safety for sure.

this got me concern about the hi beam part. i know i wont have a problem wiht low beam HID but sometimes i ride out in the country and it would be a concern for me needing an HID high beam because low beam dont reach out far enough. i have a separate set up on my truck for low beam, fog, and high beam. At first i thought no need to get a high beam for my truck but went ahead and did HID for my high beam as a why not attitude. Best move i made since it really help me see everything out in the country. Bucket part with the slim ballast is my biggest concern as well. Modification is always the best solution to any custom jobs anyway.

If you ride your bike at night for other than barhopping, then you can use the HID high beam as well.

The bi-xenon bulbs switch from low to high beam HID using a magnet that's built into the bulb itself. That's why it's not a straight forward replacement. You simply don't have the room for all the extra parts needed on the bixenon bulbs in the bucket.

Richard if you go that way bi-xenon bulb and ballast/power supply under the tank take pics. I'm interested. I have jakes in mine still even with the problems of not wanting to start sometimes due to the EHC not liking it. I like the bright light too much to take it out. Thanks for posting up the info.

I have ridden many times at night, no lights around, pitch dark, and my low beam HID lights up the sky very well. With the high beam HID, people might think I am a UFO.:roll::cheers:

Just to put my 2cents.... I used DDM Tuning HID HI/LO kits on 4 other bikes. Have not had an issue with bulbs or kit quality. My only consern with the big dog bikes, ballast of the DDM kit is wont fit into the headlight assembly. It needs to be hidden somewhere outside the headlight assembly, perhaps under the tank. As far as lightbulb color, I had 6000K installed - its bright, visible on the road. Now considering 8000K or 10000K bulb.

Trust me, do NOT lengthen the High voltage wires between the bulb and ballast!!!

It voids all warranties because it doesn't work and it is dangerous.

There is 25,000 volts running through those leads.

I worked tring to get the "Bi Xenon" High/Low kit to work, but there is no way to do it. I also tried every venue with a 55 watt slim ballast and I found out there is no such thing in exsistance. The places advertising a slim 55 watt balast are lying, they are only putting out 35watts. The 55 watt internals will not fit in a slim ballast case.

Trust me guys, I am a lighting freak! My wife thinks I am nuts because I am into HID and LED lighting so much. I know tons about it and have researched my kit to get the best parts, at the best price, and stuff that works.

You can buy cheaper, but you do "GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR"

I have the DDM bixenon hi/lo in my road glide, I use the raptor ballasts rather than the slim. Had problems with the slims. Finally got it dialed in but had my fairing off about 20 times! Couldn't go back now.

Might put the HID low in my BD but I just replaced my cheap shit broke twice adjure 4 1/2 bucket with the god awful phast lock nylon rope crap with the tiny spring that gets pulled off every time you change the bulb, with an old 5 3/4 swift motorcycle headlight. Now that pretty nice but got the stock H4 orange color.

I love HID though, prices way down all from freakin china, those basturds.
