i pulled the starter off to get ready to install my open belt from karata, and wanted to clean the starter so i pulled the 4 bolts out and pulled the starter apart, and noticed oil all in there so i took the gears out and wiped everything down, but i also noticed a heavy like grease,is that suppose to be in there for the gears? should i put a small amount back in there around the gears? also can i get a can of electro spray and spray the shit out of it? then blow it drive with my air compresser? i will then take off the other end and clean the contacts while i have it out,i just dont want any of this grease or oil getting on the clutches in the open belt since its a dry clutch.. thanks guys

Gee all I did was unbolt the starter from the stock plate, bolt the karata plate on, then bolt the starter back onto the karata...your one tuff cookie to get into the starter :)

i have a 05 and the starter was leaking oil,so from reading on here i see that you need to clean the starter otherwise you will end up with a short and getting a new starter..$$$ figure while it is out,why not clean..

There should be grease on the gears inside the starter. There are also rollers in a plastic cage in the idler gear. Make sure those get grease as well.

I rebuilt my starter after the idler gear exploded! when I put it back together I used grease that is for front wheel drive cars CV joints, (high temp and thick) not sure why mine exploded but I did have lots of grease and no oil.
