Gas cap on 2002 pitbull

I took of the left side gas cap on my pitbull thinking one side was for on and the other reserve.I could not get it by hand and my dumb ass used a pipe wrench.Not only did I chip the paint now I can't get the cap back on.It looks like the thread drop a little where it will not catch onto the cap.

Anybody know how to get that plastic threaded piece out of the dummy tank?

I am so pissed I did not know the left side was a dummy side.I thought it was just on to tight.Now I have chipped paint on the tank and a gas cap that will not screw back on.I need a freaking manual.

There are no dummy tanks. The tanks are split and they both fill. You need to try to get the plastic piece off somhow because it is part of the cap. Then you can call Landmark and get some new ones or take off the tank savers and get aftermarket caps. I use to use the kuryakyn caps after removing the paint saver. Good luck

Hey I've got a 2002 Husky and I have split tanks and the left side has reversed threads so you were probably tightning with the pipe wrench.

:iagree:left cap is left hand thread,you an remove the paint saver like someone said and you can use harley caps

Besides the screw in the middle of it is the plastic itself threaded?

I got it the cap back on this morning.The only thing I need now is to find fire engine red touch up paint.
