Gas Cap Leak

I have had a problem with my gas cap and I thought some of you might have a solution. When I first got it gas would leak through the top at every stop light. It turned out that the cap was not venting correctly. I got a 2nd cap and everything was fine for ablut 2 weeks and then the same problem again. I am now on my fourth cap and the shit is still happening. And when I say gas comming out of the cap I literally mean flowing out. When I fill the tank I do not go any higher than the bottom of the metal plate that is just below the hole. I am not topping it off. I have been working with the dealership to get a new tank and no one can figure it out. At this point I am sure my paint is ruined. Anybody have suggestions?

Thanks
Farley

when you take and put the gas all the way up to the metal with the spout hole in it ,that is topping off,and when you do this it will come up outta the tank, mine has done it from the beginning,if i dont put gas all the way to the top it doesnt come out when riding so i stick the nozzle in and when the gas pump shuts off automatically cause the level has hit the nozzle ,well thats it and everything is fine...try that once and see how it works out for you

Are you filling it up on the kick stand or sitting on it and holding it level? On the kick stand and filing it should keep the level a little lower when upright.

I am filling it up on the kickstand. The wierd thing about it is that if I get a new cap all is good for about 4 fillups and then it is all down hill. The dealer is looking for an answer and has given me the old style cap that does not click and it seems to be working better. I guess at this point I am a little worried that the paint is going to bubble. We have turned it in to BD. I guess we will have to see if they make it right.

I had my tank repainted and BD installed one of the new clicker caps and I didn't even get 50 miles on it until it vapor locked and I noticed the gas around the bung as soon as I removed the cap. When I was in Daytona a dealer removed the white part of the clicker gas cap and it didn't vapor lock again but when I got home I put the old original cap back on and haven't seen the gas around the bung since.

That sounds like the same issues I am having. I think I might buy on of the caps from low down since they dont swell and everyone seems to be happy with them

Do the newer style clicking caps come with the white check valve crap in them like the old ones?

Yes, thats the part that the dealer removed, said it was to meet emissions in Ca. My thought when he told me this was what the hell do they do in Ca. if the thing doesn't work.

Mine has also leaked gas out of the cap. I just make sure the gas level is just a bit below the edge of the hole, like maybe 1/8 inch. It hasn't been leaking since I started doing that.

Just an FYI on this topic. I got a call from the dealer today about fixing this issue. Big Dog Corporate office told them that they have recognized that there is a design flaw and working to correct the issue but do not have a solution yet. I was starting to think that I didnt even know how to fill up my bike at the gas station. On the 2008 pitbulls is where this problem is occuring. In my opinion they should have centered the gas cap instead of putting it on the rt side. They did say that when they have a solution to the problem they would make it right for me though.
