Gas cap issue

I hope someone might have a good suggestion for me.....I have an 05 Mastiff which has the split fuel tank and dual gas caps. The right side works great but the left side is extremely difficult to remove and gets very tight when reinstalling. It is so difficult to remove that I have to get a strap wrench to break it loose and then I can remove by hand. Its been replaced at least once that I can remember and the same problem occurred. When I fill my tank, the left gas cap tends to leak a little. I have checked and ensured its leaking from the cap, not from the ring. Any and all suggestions, besides working out and getting stronger, would be very much appreciated.
Thank you!!!!!

Its worth getting the new ones from landmark. They work very well. The cheap route would be to sand the threads down a bit to make it unsrew easier. The new design they make arent cheap. I think its around $70 shipped. But, that is for both caps

Do they leak? I have had a leaky cap and even after I replaced the venting system it still leaks.

Take the useless caps and paint savers off and throw them in the trash where they belonged in the first place; replace with Harley caps and enjoy miles of trouble-free riding.

the stock caps seem to swell due to ethanol they put in gas now, just get new ratcheting caps from BDM and you wont have any more troubles. FYI removing your paint savers can be a bitch to get out, not to mention you risk messing up your paint... Good Luck!

If you let your spare sit out they will dry and shrink back down. I have an 05 mastiff and purchased new threads for 5.00 each before landmark quick selling just the threads . now it's a joy to fill up. .

Thank you very much for the ideas and suggestion of Landmark. Pulled up their website and will give them a call. The anti-seize seems to be a good idea too. Odd that my right side works great, never had this problem and its the ratcheting style cap. Left side doesn't ratchet....which never really made sense to me. Again, really appreciate the feedback from all.

I just bought a 02 pitbull and I have an extreme issue with this. It is so bad that the "chrome top" part of the gas cap has unscrewed from the actual gas cap and I can not get it back on. The plastic under the top is what is showing. How can I get the cap out? Sorry if this makes no sense but it is kind of hard to explain. If needed I might be able to post a pic of my issue.

Similar boat to what I was in. Get the new caps from Landmark. Then tape off your tank and get out the hair dryer and a pipe wrench. Doesn't matter that you f up the parts coming out. Piece of cake procedure. Take you 15 minutes.

I sanded mine and have had no issues since. make sure that you clean it thoroughly if you sand it. I used a fine grit and did serveral sandings till i got it to where i wanted it. try it......if it doesn't work what did you lose....you were going to replace them anyhow.

Thanks for the info. But I don't have the chrome top on the cap, so there is nothing for a pipe wrench to grab on.

Whats left is nylon. You'll have to think outside the box to get it out. Plan on replacing it and dont worry if ya mess it up. Tape off the area around the cap before you start. You might get it moving with a small mallet and punch. Good luck.

After doing some research I found that I have Paint protector caps. So if i am reading right the paint protector should spin out? If so what would be the best way to remove it?

there is always the possibility that when you spin out the paint saver that the paint will rip on you. the paint saver is not just threaded into the tank, it was supposed to have been sealed in place with something like JBWeld. you can try heating the paint saver and maybe it will soften the JBWeld enough for it to let go but be careful. and for heavens sake, drain the tank and clear it before you put heat to it. :D

I've made a couple paintsaver removal tools. Flat piece of aluminium and some .125? steel dowel pins. Add a heat gun to soften up whatever glue was used on them and they will come out. If you can't make a tool, shoot me a pm and I can loan ya mine.
