front wheel bearing

So, I go from the rainy state of Minnesota and arrive in NH on Sunday...to rain! NH has just gone through a heat wave, and prior to that, temps were sunny and in the 80's everyday.

Monday, first day of the Laconia MC rally. Torrential rain, hail, just trying to ride hurts your face.

Tuesday, clears up some, get a little riding in. Wednesday, finally, good enough day to ride up and hook up with some of the bros.

Thursday, just riding along when I hear a weird sound like a nut or bolt that is richocheting off a metal surface. Then all is quiet. A little later (10 -15 miles) I hear a loud screech, like two rough metal surfaces scraping each other, then all is quiet. Later (several miles down the road) I hear a similar sound, followed by a loud squeak (like rubber). the sound seems to be coming from the front or top of the engine. I pull over, check the fluids and all seems good. Check engine mounts etc. all is tight. Continue riding and no problem. After a few miles I go to park and all of a sudden I can feel my front brake grabbing, seemingly activating itself and along with it, the metal screech sound. I stop and look at the rotor, pads etc. I check the caliper and all seems tight and mounted securely. In neutral it seems to roll fine.

I start riding, hear the noise and this time the front end starts vibrating and wobbling. I quickly pull over and notice that the rubber seal on the front wheel (brake side) is off and it appears that maybe a metal ring is also floating around. I get a ride to a friends house, grab a trailer and bring the dog back to where I am staying. I hope the local BD dealer can help out tomorrow. I'm concerned since I called the dealer yesterday inquiring about a battery for the dawg and was told they do not have any BD batteries available or in stock.

Any ideas on what happened? How quick a fix it may be?

Thanks for any responses.

I would guess there may be some hub damage but you will not know till you get into it.
At least you stopped the bike before it stopped you. :2thumbs:

Let us know how it goes.

WTF, what kind of dealership is this?? I call the local BD dealership in NH. ask if they can fix the front wheel bearing. "We can do that"...but, the mechanics do not work on Fridays, and we have no parts. Drop your bike off and maybe we can get it done in a week or two.

Very disappointing. Finally, good riding weather, a good rally and no bike. Would addressing this with Big Dog serve any good in regards to a poor dealership?

at least you didn't wreck.
I haven't had very good luck with my dealer either.

How many miles do you have on your bike?

Sorry to hear about the road trip breakdown. You may want to do a search on here for if not mistaken there was a thread on this very item and if I recall right the bearing are pretty standard and can be bought from other places than BD. POssibly even a HD shop or some regular bearing, machine part dealer including possibly even a good local auto parts store.

If so, more than likely if the hub is not screwed up, you and your buds can do it yourself quickly and for less than a six pack.

Check the folders and see what come up on the search. I know that Raywood has changed them out a few times and is pretty much part of his routine before those long trips.

Good Luck.

Wow, great responses, I will get on the horn immediately and see if I can find something around here. I have just over 25K on the bike and this is the first major issue I have had.

its the same as a HD 1" bearing.

look for an indy shop

if you have the tools i'd pull the wheel and just bring that in. they'd be more apt to do it right away.
Right on Sul ... no need for BDM parts as wheel are pretty standard and HD parts work just fine. :2thumbs:

I thought that the front axel was 3/4 thats why we had to use the 1 inch adapter in our BW 360 brakes. should be able to find the bearing easily enough anyway

Well, since I was tooless and the local BDM dealer doesn't stock parts I googled the BDM website and found four other shops that could do the work. the closest was just over an hour away so I called there and he said bring it on down.

The owner/mechanic, Scott managed to fit my bike in between others he was wrenching on. The bearing on the rotor side was completely gone, nothing but empty space and a chewed up metal ring. The other side was pretty much shot also. Scott stated that they should have caught this at the last maintenance I had done. (My last 10K style maintenance at the dealer was less than 3K ago.)

So, it took awhile (5 1/2 hours down time) but Scott replaced the bearings (had to build and smooth the interior of the hub out where it got scored up), replaced the front tire (which was pretty poor, still on the original), put the bike all back together, wiped it all down and I was on my way.

Total cost for everything was $357 (bearings, labor, new tire, mount, balance (used dyna beads)) and off I go.

For anyone in the MA. / NH / ME area, Scotts shop is FB Custom Cycles at 11 Caller Street in Peabody, MA. 978-531-1776. Though it is a small one man shop, he is a BDM service shop and has BDM parts in stock. He did a great job getting me back on the road, great guy to talk with and most importantly, knows bikes. He gave me (what was left) the old parts and wrote up a good work order so I can hopefully recoup some of the expenses from my extended warranty.

So, back on the road, riding better than ever...
