Front Shock Issue

This is a new shock from the factory from last summer that replaced one damaged in an accident. One year later, and the chrome is completely peeling off. I had my local dealer send in the pictures to the factory. Do you think they will cover this, being that its a little over a year old now? I haven't heard anything for a couple weeks now.

Holy shit! That's bad!!! That type of failure, it's pretty obvious you weren't to blame. So I'd like to think they'd cover it!!!

Keep us posted on how it turns out

I sticks in my mind that chrome parts are covered for a short time period 3 or 6 months tops, hopefully I'm wrong and they will cover this for you....
Good Luck

Wow...I haven't seen anything that bad!
I don't know who BD used as a chromer but sure leaves a lot to be desired. :bang:
Good Luck as this "should" be replaced no matter what!

you're right, it is 6 months. but that is extreme and would not doubt but what they do go ahead and approve the replacement. good luck.

WOW! Cheap job! Looks like it was flash chromed. Chrome plating right over the aluminum instead of copper, nickel, and then chrome. Made in China???

Holy cow! That's ridiculous. Surely they will stand up for this one. BD needs to find themselves a different chromer. (Chromer) is that a word?

I will be really disappointed in Big Dog if they do not stand behind this kind of Workmanship:bang:

Based on what my dealer found out from the factory, they stand by their existing warranty policy of covering replacement parts for only 6 months.

This is obviously shoddy workmanship, which really shouldn't be considered in the same 6 month policy as other types of parts (ie. Chroming can take longer than 6 months to show issues).

So, since the dealer avenue didn't work out, does anyone have a more direct connection at the factory that I can plead my case to, in order to try to get a better outcome here?

Thanks

What dealership ? I can't believe a Dealership would pass this off on Manufacturer.
They repaired / sold you the parts. They should be calling BDM on this one I think. But they should warrante their work and replace the lower leg. When did it start peeling ,
this didn't happen overnight.I've delt with another so called American motorcycle manufacturer. They warrante their parts for a year. This is disappointing. Keep post up to date. Good Luck .

When did it start peeling
The whole left side shock was replaced in July 2009. I first started noticing blistering in July 2010. (bike is stored in heated garage during winter). By August 2010, the peeling started to happen.

Have you talked to BDM directly? 316-267-9121
Not yet. I had been letting my dealer try to do the work with them up until now, when they let me know they weren't getting anywhere with them.

My dealer did offer to help out on the repair, but I don't think BDM should be let off the hook here. I'll give this number a try, but I'm not expecting positive results.

Well, it looks like tough times down at the BDM factory these days.

I finally got in direct contact with Bob L there, and he put it to me plain and simple - up until about a year ago, they could have done something for me in honoring a defective part that was past their vendor's warranty period.

But they have gone from 350 employees down to in the 30's now. They no longer have any kind of budget for good faith work. Just whatever the parts vendors provide to them.

So based on this, I am thinking then that they must be forced to accept low ball bids from vendors that don't necessarily put out the best quality parts.

Just a warning then to keep this in mind when having to do some replacement work with the factory. Might want to check on who is really supplying the new parts that will be on your ride.
