Fork Seals and Dust Covers

So, I'm working on my wide glide and started taking the forks apart. Well HD puts an extra dust boot on the sliders. We all have seen issues were water pools on the top seal of the fork sliders. These boots fit (on an HD) in that space to keep water from pooling. Anybody ever try and use them on our forks?

Just going to leave another area that water will sit under it or over it in my opinion.

rain is one thing, however most of the water into the fork seals and other seals is caused by using carwash or powerwashers.
popping the dust covers is a good thing to do after washing or riding in the rain.

This is funny to me there is no way water can get in there with the o ring on the dust cap which is there to keep debris from getting in there, I just redid my forks this fall the new o ring comes with the rebuild kit. Upon disassembly everything still looked new no signs of water or debris.

Youve never ridden in the rain.....i replace those seals everytime and I still get a little dirt and water occasionally.

I have ridden in the rain many times I also wash my motorcycle with a hose , soap and water and never got water in the forks. Where are you getting the O rings from? Maybe the ones you use aren’t the correct size and tolerance.

I have all my items to start my 06 Mastiff front fork rebuild, I have new uppers and lowers. However when I mic the top chrome cap, I get 1 3/8 inch for the chrome top cover. However when I put my socket on the cap it really wobbles. I don't want to mar the chrome finish and maybe I could just mask the cap and be fine but if I had the correct size it would not mar the finish. I was thinking that maybe this might be a metric, but it doesn't mic out. My question is what size is the top chrome cap?

When I was young I rode in all types of crappy weather. Yea my bike was my only transportation back then. As I grow older I sorta avoid the bad weather. The truck is much more comfortable in the rain. Guess I'm getting soft in my old age..

Tape your socket with masking tape.

Just bought an ‘04 chopper. I’m used to riding my Harley everywhere anytime and hard. I’m afraid to do that with this chopper because of the electrical issues and super low clearance. What can I do to sure things up for long road trips. Also, how long can I expect fork seal kits to last. Couldn’t find this info in handbook.

The electric can be solved with $. Curtis has replacement harness and the Electronix Box by Alexy. It is a rock solid replacement. When replacing be sure to grab a can of marine conformal coating. Spray all PC boards you can find. Dielectric grease and heat shrink all the connectors. That should make it dang near waterproof. Fork seals should be good for 20-30k or so. Clearance is a whole 'nother ball of wax. Just gotta get used to that part...

I solved my clearance problem. Because we ride these things like crotch rockets, dragging pegs in the corners, I got a set of 442 shocks from Wild Steed works, cut an 1/8'' off the end of the stem so I could screw the eyelet on further. The shorter the shock, the higher the back will be. I also am running 12 over tubes on the front end.
Get on that thing and ride it. When were riding in a group, the Harleys can't even keep up with us.
