Fix for the DSSC clutch hub nut constantly coming loose?

I'm going to take 2 clutch hub nuts and turn them down to half-width then double nut them on the main shaft. What do you guys think?

I never had my clutch nut come loose before and I had it off a bunch of times! I put a shit load of red loctite on it and put it on with a air gun and never had any problems! Just saying.

I think how you ride has alot to do with it. I've got 2 bikes that constantly come back with loose nuts. One guy is on his 5th time. They both "hood ride" in Philadelphia, full throttle, then chop and brake. On and off the gas constantly for short bursts. Both also ride about 5-8k miles a year. None of the other DSSC bikes I've worked on have ever come back

I think thats a very good Idea.:2thumbs: Couple this up with some loctite should do the job.

Might work as long as you don't loose any strength by cutting the nut in half. they usually have some sort of safety factor built in. check with a fastener vendor.

The issue is going to be thread engagment. Will the threads pull off the nut when I torque it. I guess we'll see.

I had this problem with my baffle bolts so I miged them...but I don't plan on removing them again either.:roll::cheers:

I agree that I wouldn't think you'd be able to get the same lb ft to hold with 1/2 the threads.
I used to have mine come loose too much (4-5x's); the last was in FL one yr where I nursed it to Tampa BD. They decided the threads on the nut where too sharp/worn and replaced it with a different one and torqued it down (likely impact gun) and I haven't had it happen again in roughly 8k + miles.
I'm always concerned about it now though having been stranded a cpl times due to it. I am wondering if we can purchase a lock nut of the proper size; not the nylon type locker (although that might work too?) but rather the old school style where they dimple the side/threads - I don't know the proper name of it.
I also wondered if we can flatten the shaft to put a bend over washer on with a flat on it like you'd find on a spindle hub.
I'm just trying to share other possible ideas as I too would like peace of mind with it given it really sucks constantly wondering if it's going to loosen up on a rd trip - or any time really.
There has to be some lock fastener to give us this peace of mind I would think.

Clutch Basket Retaining Nut

:flag: PurpleDog the treatment that you are thinking of, if I can remember correctly, is a "deformed" threaded fastener or nut. The simple fixes are often the best--mechanical interference. Simple as dog s--t.

dont think it would work MOE,in this case 2 halfs dont make a whole ,they just make 2 skinnier clutch nuts without enough threads to hold what they are supposed to hold...the concept sounds logical and a no brainer, but i bet that nut is as big as it is for a reason, and that is to hold the amount of torque one puts to it,cut it in 1/2 and I would bet you can only get 1/2 as much torque to it!!!

It appears that several bikes have had the " clutch nut came loose" problem including my 2005 Chopper DT. Upon careful inspection I found that no loctite had been used at factory install and that with a little red loctite and tightening all worked out just fine.

I think Purpledog is headed in the right direction! Maybe drill a hole in the shaft and get a castellated nut and cotter pin it in place. I think that'll fix the issue...

I wish I had more money.
Could you use a whole nut with a half nut behind it? Or even less than a half. I dont think it would take much of a nut to lock the other down.
