Exotx stainless mesh air filter - links and tech info

so I was looking around for a good flowing, good filtering replacement air filter and the Exotx stainless mesh unit peaked my interest- I ordered one of the "extended height" models.

(pictures, prices)--> Exotx: "Pricing

The diameter of the filter is 6.25" and uses the typical 3-hole stand offs- from what I've read it fits either directly or with some easy minor modding to any of the various 6.5" round backing plates such as Screaming Eagle, Ness Big Sucker, LA Choppers, RSD, etc. - Exotx also sells their own backing plate kit which looks like a nice clean design.

Anyway I'll post up some pics and further thoughts after I get it installed. My other choices were the Woods K325 filter or the generic K&N extended height replacement filter. But, the Woods is 8" round (kind of huge), and the Exotx does not need oiling.

Here is the "tech" info I was able to gather that led to my decision- I know most of you like rocking the spike style or dual runner intakes but for anyone with the more traditional style intake this may be of interest.

----CFM Flow of different brand filters----
Tested at 1.5 hg test pressure (1.5hg = 20.4" WC)
These are all roughly 6.25" diameter by 2.25" height oiled filters. the Woods is larger at 8" diameter, the Exotx 'extended height' is 6.25" by 2 7/8" high.

H-D stock 171.2 (Baseline ref)
Zipper's Performance 320.8
Cycle Smiths 303.5
K&N 300.1
Screamin' Eagle 287.7
Doherty Machine 287.0
Kuryakyn 269.5
Woods KF300 is for 90-plus hp / flows 282 cfm. (8" diameter - made by K&N)
Woods KF325 is for the really big cubic inches / flow 340 cfm. (8" diameter - made by K&N)
Exotx Extended height filter 380 cfm
- so far this one has the highest flow rate

--------Dust Filtration-------------
Dust testing was performed using ISO5011 Coarse Test Dust (about the consistency of baby powder), the industry standard for IC Engine Air Filter Testing.
Here's the ISO 5011 test results (provided by Exotx):

Weight of Contaminants that Passed Through Filter (less is better!):

Stock Paper Filter
0.89 Grams

Leading Aftermarket 'Oiled' Filter
2.32 Grams

Exotx SUPERFILTER
0.85 Grams

These results show that the Exotx will block more than double the amount of dust of a typical aftermarket 'performance' filter.

Restriction to Air Flow At Test Start (less is better!):

Stock Paper Filter
6.75 "H2O

Leading Aftermarket 'Oiled' Filter
6.25 "H2O

Exotx SUPERFILTER
6.00 "H2O

These results show the Exotx will flow air better.

kinda pricey but the numbers look good. what it all breaks down to is how good you feel about it. and i am sure, after spending $$$$$ getting your motor back together, you are gonna feel real good about protecting it the best you can.

Yeh I think that was the main driver besides air flow- if this filter provides better protection then it's worthwhile. plus I like the no-oil aspect. The Woods filter is not much less $ and it's a KN- so I guess for all stainless the price is really not that bad. I found a source that will do free ship / no tax- I'm seeing if I can also work out some 'group buy' pricing etc. -will post what I come up with.

BTW I just realized- if you are talking "complete kit" including backing plate / filter / ginchy cover, the Exotx prices out less than several of the well known others that use the KN filter (Ness, RSD etc) - which actually makes it a decent deal. So I guess buying filter by itself is not as good a deal overall as buying all items as a kit.

It's too bad they do not make any cones / filters for the spike intakes or dual runners- that would be sweet.

yeh I'll report back after I get it in hand. They make three types of filters-

1. the standard height tapered style, has a metal plate affixed to taper end with three offset holes and a center threaded hole - it is 6.25" round at base by 2.25" deep. the taper end is about 5.5" wide. this should fit any of the 6"-7" round backer plates used by Ness, Zippers and others that use the typical three post standoffs / center cover with single screw

2. the "extended height" version same specs as #1 but is 2 7/8" deep - so you'd need to shim your stand offs with some washers but you'd get max flow from this deeper filter

3. a "donut" style round filter that has no top plate an no taper, like the stock filters for the elongated S.E. and S&S teardrop kits. They made this style as a direct drop in replacement for the HD filters on carb and efi scoots.

so I guess ya their stuff will fit most of the typical units out there - but I was surprised that the cost of their total kit is pretty reasonable. It's good to know they make their own backer plate.

I found a pic on their website of their mesh close up as compared to KN. Left side of pic is the stainless 30 micron mesh. So yeh I'd say it will probably filter quite well without impeding flow, and no oil. I read on some of the HD forums that they just throw em in the dishwasher. that is my kind of convenient..

one negative thing I seem to notice about their backer plate is it vents breathers back into the carb. You'd have to use longer hollow bolts with banjo fitting at end to bypass this and route breathers outboard. Nothing new though I had to do this to my LA Choppers XxX backer plate - seems pretty standard for most of the aftermarket setups of this type to route into the carb.

So I just got it in the mail yesterday- I can tell you this thing is definitely high quality. and it is light weight.

Hey if you hold this up to the light and look through it, you can actually see the light no prob through the mesh. that is a good thing, this will flow excellently and still trap even the smallest particles.

BTW if anyone is looking for a velocity stack that actually works well, search ebay or google for "Novello velocity stack" - they apparently are the only stacks designed for flow-by air passing over the top of the stack. not cheap though, and of course not much dirt protection.. lol

here are some pics of this baby held up to the light. and yes it does have dense micro-mesh even though it "looks" like the holes are big in the photo.
