Ehc symptoms

For those of you who have replaced your Ehc, what symptoms were you having from your bike? For the past couple years my bike will intermittently not start. It's now getting to where it doesn't start more often then it does. I have power everywhere, but when push the start button, my headlight turns off but nothing else. No clicks, no starter turn, nothing. I've replaced battery and even today tried to start it with a battery charger/starter just to make sure it wasnt the battery. Still no love from the old dog. On the occasions that it does start it fires up like normal and runs fine.

No spark intermittently. High beam never worked since I bought bike. Ehc came on when I heated it up. Just installed the gen 2 RIP from big dog. So far bike runs great. Starts every time. High beam even works now. In my opinion get the old ehc out and give yourself some peace of mind.

The symptoms of a failing EHC can be similar. Intermittent spark, horn sounding without pressing the horn button, no LED lights on the EHC working, blinkers not working, etc. you'll find that all that have had issues with their EHC have had a similar number of electrical failures until it finally hits the ignition system. Not everyone has had their EHC fail, and some replaced their EHC before experiencing any issues. All in all, for the peace of mind I would recommend replacing the EHC. I do like Axel's replacement. Easy install, excellent warranty, great service. I have nothing bad to say about the other options out there for a replacement but I have installed a few of these units on a few fellow Big Dog owners in my area and those bikes are running strong with no issue.

You may also want to check your wires, could be grounding out.i would start with the headlight wires and like many have experienced including me check to see if the plug is melted.

The battery is definitely good. I will check during and see if I can find anything, although I assure you, electrical is not my specialty. Both my headlights work fine, but I will check and see if anything is melted. It does seem to be some kind of electrical issue though as the battery, starter, and all that check out.

I'm having a problem with bike not starting battery is charged but nothing else will work what you suggest
Hi Brenda,
Your best bet is to start a new thread for info because it will become confusing later with people responding to two different posts in the same thread. You and Kdub.

It does sound like an EHC failure. To troubleshoot (while it's failing) pull the green wire off the starter solenoid and put a meter on the connector to see if you get ballpark 12vdc when you hit the start button after hitting run. You should also hear a click from the compression releases for one second at the same time. The headlight turning off when you hit start is supposed to happen so your start switch is probably working and sending the signal to the EHC to crank the starter and trigger the CR's. Believe it or not a cold EHC can fail but when warm no issues. When it's failing look at your fault lights and if several are red warm the EHC up with a hair dryer to see if the condition changes. If you can start up after warming the EHC it's probably a good choice to order a replacement from Wildsteedworx.
