EHC is history finally!

Energy One

Well, I finally did it.
I replaced the EHC with the wire plus unit on my 04 chopper.
Here is my take on the install...
It took me 8 hours to do it. I probably could have done it faster, but I was very careful and patient with it.
Overall the kit was straightforward and seemed well constructed.
I used a good meter that gave a "tone" for continuity which helped me greatly. I guess putting in the sportster switch is what took some figuring out, because I was careful with the mounting and drilling and tapping the set screw to help hold it in place.
Funny, the bike seems stronger now.... could be in my mind.
On inital start up, everything worked as it should. I shut it down several times and it restarted with no issues.
I will take it for a ride tomorrow, but I just ran out of time today.
Something else could break, as with any machine, but at least that wiring gremlin may be put to rest for good.
I am not an ace mechanic, and did not run into any problems, so I believe anyone can do it, if they just take their time and pay attention.
I am glad its over, and I hate I waited this long to make the conversion.
Just thought you guys would want to know
:D

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY

Hammitt, WAY TO GO:2thumbs:

Welcome to the "Wire-Plus" Family. Did mine a few months ago and it is just a pleasure to ride and not worry about breaking down with that "EHC":bang:

Congratulations:cheers:

BD Wireplus

I haven't been on the board in a long while, but anyway, I was told that BigDog was releasing their own WirePlus to replace the EHC... a direct plug in play....

BD Tampa said they had several on order.

Anyone else hear of it? Thoughts?

The direct plug and play would definately be easier and probably neater.
Wonder if they are going to eliminate the ehc on the new bikes?

Agrees I think they do run stronger or maybe it is all the polishing I have been doing that makes it cut the wind even faster!! I am still going to shoot the old EHC with a high powered rifle when I get the chance!!! Welcome to the Wire Plus family!!

Save the high powered rifle - a BB gun would make it look like Swiss Cheese!

Make sure you put loctite on the ignition switch nut that holds it in place on the outside of the housing. I didn't and it wasn't long before it came off. Now only the set screw is holding the switch in place. I need to stop by Harley and get another one.

Eric,

I was told the same thing by Big Dog of Tampa.. I was also told by Bob Lockwood at the main shop that it would be ready by mid-OCt but that was false!! And the answer to the question about the new bikes, they will not have that POS EHC in them!! I had my bike towed back out of Tampa! So unprofessional and terrible service!! Not to mention they replaced many things before they told me it was the EHC and that was after having my bike for 3 weeks!! I was waiting for that BD harness but now I dont want to give them another dime. I am thinking of putting the WP in this weekend. How was your experience with Tampa?

Just so you guys know, I've been gluing the ignition switches in with great results. Tapping that hole is a tricky proposition and a PIA. Since breaking my tap off in Pop's bike I've started gluing the key switches in with Black RTV and not one has ever come loose, I've got 5 bikes riding around like that now, one with over 8k miles. I just did another last night, I'll post some pics. Works great and no screwing with trying to tap in such a tight space.

I will agree that the drilling and tapping is a pain.
That is what gave me the most grief on the entire install... the switch.
Again... have been ridin it and couldn't be happier!

Yeah Pops, you're riding around with the tip of a 1/4-20 tap in your side cover. LOL don't worry it doesn't affect anything, you can't see it unless you take out your key switch, and the weight gain is negligible so it won't hurt your performance!

I think if a person used tiny pieces of tape and numbered the wires before cutting them is would be easier, especially all those red ones that very close to one another. I had to use a magnifing glass to even see the numbers. Beyond that it wasn't too bad. The drilling and taping was the pretty simple, but I too am glad it is over!

Yup, heard the same thing from BDM while in Sturgis. I was told Coleman wanted them ASAP but there is manufacturing time involved so no solid date for release.

I bought my WP a looonnnngggg time ago and still haven't put it in yet, just lazy I guess. Plus, I haven't had a single issue with my EHC in 3.5 yrs... I'm one of the lucky ones.
