EHC FLASH - DO I NEED IT?

Hey all,

As I was diagnosing and fixing a recent electrical issue (corroded connection between battery and starter/solenoid), I read about the "second" speedo sweep. I knew to watch for the first sweep on turning the key, but didn't know I should see a second sweep when letting off the run button. Apparently, this means I don't have the current software flashed on my EHC. I have a '07 K9. Is this something I need to have done? What's the upside? Downside?

Thanks guys! I appreciate the immense amount of knowledge passed around on this site. You've already saved me $$$ with the above mentioned electrical issue.

Please shed some light on this "second sweep" not aware of this...is this true for all bikes or only EFI?

I only learned of this in another post. Word was that if you didn't see the second sweep of the speedo hand it meant you didn't have the most up to date EHC software. I am not sure of the EFI versus carb'ed question. Like I said, I have an '07 K9 (carbeurated), so I'm curious about this very question. I posed the question to the many "wrenches" on this site.

If you EHC has a USB connection then there is an update where they will flash your EHC by plugging into it. If you have the round Serial plug then it can't be flashed.
You should have it done and the way to tell that it is done is that the speedo will sweep a second time after the bike is started.

When it first came out earlier this year a lot of dealers were not trained yet but all should be capable of dong it now. I shouldn't cost you anything.

I would imagine this wouldn't apply to 08 and newer models.

BUT, not all with the USB port will get flashed. when shane and i were down at daytona in the spring, jason was unable to flash either of ours due to corruption of the ehc. but this, as far as i know, has not caused any problem with the operation of the bikes. what jason recommended was to leave it alone and run it until there was a problem which could be a long time, or not. so far so good. i trust jason.

basically it resets the speedo again after the bike is started in order to make sure all of the functions of the speedo are working properly.

I thought the second sweep was to try and wipe off all the moisture in the speedometer that the first sweep left...

Just for any of you that have a HID kit that works fine with the current software...

If you get the updated flash you will probably have issues with the HID. The new software does not get along with electrical items that are changed on the bikes and has been known to get locked in a loop within itself.

A few with HID kits have had this issue, alot have not had a problem.

Just my .02 cents... I would not do the flash until you EHC takes a shit from natural causes and you get a new one with the new software in it.

...That is what I would do!

But as Neil stated:roll: ... That second sweep would make it easier to read!!!!

I got my EHC software updated, but sort of the hard way. When our most excellent tech (and I mean that) tried to do the update, my EHC failed completely. They just put in a brand new EHC, which already had the new software installed - now it does the second sweep.

The purpose of the second reset is that OCCASIONALLY the voltage drop while running the starter would cause the speedo to not initialize properly - too much current draw all at once. That would leave the speedo inoperative, or out of synch. I only saw that happen once or twice on mine. As I recall, there were some forum members who seemed to mention it more often.

Bottom line - if your speedo has been working fine, don't worry about it. On the other hand, if it's in the shop anyway, let 'em do the update.

Thanks, all. Sounds like I'll let it go until I have to. No problems so far. No sense messing with it.

I remember this, at the time I had the serial port. At biketoberfest I had the EHC replaced and flashed so it now does two sweeps. I have noticed it starts much easier, before the compression releases would close too early. Are you going to get them replaced?

yeah I had mine done in June when my scoot was at the dealer....it sweeps a second time when the motor is started....last year when it was colder out...sometimes my speedo would freeze up and after a couple of miles would work again....after replacing the battery and got the firmware down loaded...haven't had any problems yet:D
