Dry Slumping

Has anyone heard of Dry slumping whereby my 2005 Big Dog Chopper jsut spit oil out for no reason other than having sat for a few months whilst in the processs of buying a new home.
I went to jump start it, left it sit, and voila, oil just came out. I bought a new battery as the other one was done, rode it 35 miles home, put it in the garage and about 1 quart came runnning out from somewhere underneath.
ANy advise on 1, if this is a problem to how to address it and 2, how can I check the oil levels or just change it out at home?
THanks for the help. Also does anyone have a blown up illustrated parts breakdown or know where I can find one to look at?

Well I have an 05 chopper and have never had anything like that happen, even after sitting for extended times.

1. If you lose a quart of oil, I'd say its a problem. I would check to see if your oil drain plug is there, check the oil lines, make sure they are connected and in good condition and check the oil filter. Something has to be leaking.

Never had that happen, but don't ever jump start these bikes! Real good way to fry the EHC!!!

Being a 2005, you should not be having a wet sump problem. You only have 3 lines going into oil tank...Feed, return and breather. Do you have a head breather line going down and dumping off below the frame? You should not have that much oil blowing off after sitting. You might want to get yourself a light and mirror and start looking under the bike to see where it came from.

This is called sumping. Oil gets past the check valve and "seeps" into the crankcase over time. Mostly happens after sitting for a long time. You can check the oil level, find nothing on the dipstick, and after running the engine for a short time, you will find the oil level at the proper mark.
Happens on EVO style motors.

On the early model yes. But not 05 and up with the 117" motors. Crankcase is vented into the oil tank so no wet sumping on these. The 107" can if sitting a while and the oil pump bypass valve is sticking, dirty or just needs to be replaced with plunger and spring.

Might have been thinking about this all wrong. The oil you are seeing might not be motor oil (most likely not, unless one of your lines is loose or has a hole in it) it's very possible it's the transmission leaking. Being an 05, the counter shaft bolt could have backed out, pushing it's way through the seal and causing your major oil leak. I would check all your fluids, not just motor oil. Look under bike with a mirror and flashlight and try to find the leak at it's highest point.
If it is coming from the transmission, I would seriously consider having it rebuilt with the new main shaft and all other updates including the bearings.:cheers:

Did you or someone install a fitting at the rear of the case(across from the oil pump, there's 2 holes, usually plugged,) if so that's the area that's pissing oil.
Dirt gets under the ball check in the oil pump(cap on left top of oil pump) and lets oil drain into the sump.
Also have you added oil after letting the bike sit for a period of time without starting it first? If so you may be overfilled.
!- check for a fitting rear of case.
2-start bike, run for 30 or so seconds, then check your oil level.
