drilling out the stock exhaust pipes

Since I live in a tightly packed community, I leave for work at 5:45 every morning and I like my neighbors a lot so changing my exhaust to say Vance and Hines or similar system might just make me a bit unpopular, I was considering just drilling out the plugs in my stock exhaust and re-jetting my carb. Does anyone know what jets I need to replace and what size I would need to get my carb correct after doing this? Where I could get these jets? ( maybe Vickie) Also I already added the louvered air cleaner plate to help my carb breathe a little better, would I have to replace my stock air cleaner as well? I have the Super G shorty carb as I'm sure you all are aware of since my ride is a 2007 Chopper. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, BBD :flag:

You're intake and exhaust are very restrictive. If you punch out the plugs in the exhaust then you should increase the intake by replacing the paper filter with a free flowing K&N or other type filter.
If you punch out the 4 plugs in the exhaust and install a better filter then you may need to increase the jets to something like what comes with the exhaust kits from the factory. A 31/76 combo is popular.

Hey Ray, as always, great advice. I did exactly as you did and just knock them loose and push them horizontal. Readjusted the a/f mixture and what a difference it made in the torque and performance over the way it was. I ordered the K&N air filter this afternoon. I'm liking the way it sounds and I have always liked the look of the stock exhaust. Sooo...... you just saved me about 800.00 and I couldn't be happier. Loud but not obnoxious and has a deep and satisfying rumble. Thanks a lot buddy.

Hay big ..I did the same to my bike the second day I had it,the response picked up big time and it just seems to take deeper breaths LOL The warranty though? I think I need to go up with main jet ..haven't done it yet let me know what you do?

Scuba, after I put the K&N in and readjust the carb I'll let you know. I personally like the way the stock exhaust looks. I'm sure many will disagree with that but like candy , to each his own flavor. Yea the way it pulls from gear to gear was amazing after removing the plugs. A definite improvemnet. I'm thinking right now that with the K&N improving the intake side of things I may not have to rejet. Time will tell. What I am concerned about to a small degree is how it will pull my MPG's down. By making the A/F mixture richer to quiet down the decel popping I'm thinking I may be hurting the MPG"S. I was getting around 39 to 40 MPG but I'll need to ride it a while to determine if it improves or gets worse. Hey, what's life without an adventure or two in to the unknown?

This is going to be good keep me in the loop ....I'm trying to save some money right now but I think I have to dump the exhaust... I'm leaning towards the B and R pipe and the S&S intake! I have the same decel poping and can control it by mixture but plugs are black and mpg is way down I had to switch to reserve at 90miles last Saturday cold !!! It runs strong but I know there is more there!! Twin bikes same set up ..?? Virginia brother

Your going to need to bump the intermediate jet to a .031, the main jet might be ok. MPG should stay the same or might even improve since you'll be using less throttle for a given speed. Running too lean will also cause an intermittent carb sneeze of backfire at cruise (along with a hotter running engine).

This was my first mod too. I didn't like the raspy sounding exhaust sound though. I can tell you my new pipe made a huge difference in power over the opened up stock system (verified via ass dyno).

BLACK DAWG, I LOVE THAT 2 INTO 1 SYSTEM. THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR. MOST OF THE 2-1 FLARE OUT TOO MUCH AT THE END OF THE SYSTEM FIOR MY TASTE BUT THAT ONE IS AWESONE! LOOKS GREAT. HOW MUCH DOES THAT SYSTEM COST? ALSO, DO YOU KNOW WHERE I CAN GET .031 INTERMIDIATE JETS FOR MY SUPER G CARB?

Thanks! Expect to pay about $630 for chrome w/o shields. I have the shields but have not installed them yet. Those pics are of my bike, btw. The sound is good too, almost like a big block muscle car. And it's not obnoxiously loud, though when you nail it it definitley will turn heads. If you order a pipe be sure and specify to tell them you want your exhaust exit to look like mine (assuming you like it).

You can get an intermediate jet at your dealer or S&S.

Yea I do like that back slash cut over the side slash cut. So in the picture there are no heat shields over the pipes? Hmmm... will bluing become a problem without the heat shields? By the way, that's a really fine looking K-9. awesome bike. I would have bought the K-9 but with the extended 2 1/2 inch forward controls on my chopper it fit my 6'2" frame just fine. I just prefered the 250 tires handling a tiny bit better than the 300. Just a personal prefrence. Anyway BD thanksa for finding the system I have been searching for over the last year for me. I wanted the preformance of the 2 in to 1 but the styling of all the others turned me off untill now. It is just spectacular in my book. Thanks amigo, BBD

Hey Black Dawg, you had to fabricate your mounting bracket for this exhaust? I noticed that it isn't where the stock bracket bolts up. But I like the way this system shows off more of the transmisson and allows you to put rear pegs on without the offset clevis mounts. Hmm...

Black dog I think I said B&R but I that R&B pipe was the one I was talking about ...the heat shields How much? and do you need them ? I love the looks also but if I wanted a side exit they would do that? How much HP was the mod over stock punched out exhaust.

The heat shields cost $150 (just checked my invoice). I haven't installed them because it looks great so far with no blueing (yet). It's bound to happen eventually, and I haven't rode the bike more than a few hundred miles since I installed the pipe. There is also a product called "Blue Job" that supposedly will remove any bluing, I have some but haven't used it either.

The heat shields supplied with this pipe cover the primaries and only a small portion of the collector and muffler.

I have not dynoed the bike, so there is no before and after comparison. But I raced a buddy's 95ci 115hp T-man springer and pulled him pretty good, before the pipe it was a tie.

The bracket is easy to fabricate. Here's a thread that shows pics of the bracket:

Looks are subjective, but I agree this is a fine looking pipe and it makes the bike look much leaner. And it's probably the only pipe commercially available that actually makes a big increase in power across all the rpm points.

Ray, I rejetted my carb this afternoon with the BDM jet kit ( 31 /76) for the vance and hines big radius pipes. Now my question is...

will i be able to readjust the air/fuel mixture enough to stop most of the decel popping with these jets in the carb?

also my fuel mileage should get better since it has the K&N air filter system with the BDM free flowing air cleaner front plate and all 4 exhaust plugs totally removed, I hope so anyway. I know it pulls a lot stronger than the stock set up was. It almost sopunds like straight drag pipes now only not that loud at an idle which should make my neighbors a little happier:roll:

i only like a coupla my neighbors and only a couple probally like me,seems its only the ones with bikes around here that even socialize anyway....i dont rev it and that crazy stuff and totally annoy them,but this is why i seek refuge in these here united states of america...its the freedom to do almost what i want

The only known cure for decel pop is just don't slam the throttle closed at rpm, I usually just ease off the throttle and that prevents 95% of the decel pop.
