Dremel and Feltbobs Question

So while my dog is out of commission I decide to get some good polishing attempted. I took my dremel and some wheel feltbobs along with some Mother's billet polish and started polishing my brake caliper. I would take just a touch of polish with my finger and rub it on the caliper, then with the dremel, polish it until shiny. Problem is, after it gets shiny, if I keep going it seems to "burn" the aluminum. (Dark marks wherever the wheel goes). I have to apply another layer of polish and wipe it off with a microfiber towel. Not sure if the burning is a dremel speed issue or am I just doing this wrong. I've tried using the white compound also, but it doesn't get as shiny. Any advice here would be appreciated.
Thanks

Yeah Scottie if the wheel runs out of polish it will do that even if you put some on the part itself. Just use a lot of polish and you will be fine. I always go back over it with a micro towel and hand polish it to take any leftover residue off!

I use jeweler's rouge too on the polished stuff that come in a chunk the white stuff This will cut thru anything just load up the wheel then do a small place at a time. Takes a while but with the dremel on high works great then I polish it with Mothers, Fritz, or whatever you have after.

Good luck can't wait to see the bike after you get all the chrome goodies back!

Thanks Craig. Yeah, counting the days until the wheels come back from Brown's. They are going to look great.

I was processor/finisher in a dental lab for a couple years after high school. We used those feltbobs a lot for polishing metal and acrylic. I can tell you this. They are more abrasive than a rag wheel type polisher and they do generate more heat. I would suggest using those things as a first step and then finish off with something softer like the cotton rag ones when possible. The final buff may be better off with little or no polish loaded on the wheel. Pressure/speed have a big impact on the final product too.

Good luck. Show us some pics when she's done.
