Down tube removal.

Can anyone share a good method for removing the down tubes from the triple-trees. I am in the process of rebuilding the shocks on my K-9 and can not turn the tubes out. I have Accutronix triple-trees and have removed everything including the pincher bolts but can not get the tubes to turn out-I assume they are threaded in the top tree. Any assistance would be appreciated.

You will need to remove two top bolts on top of triple trees. Remove front brake caliper. If you have removed the pinch bolts straddle front tire and lift up on forks a little to release pressure on tubes should slide down and out of triple trees. Hope this helps. Others may have a better way and chime in. Good luck

Thanks guys--but as indicated in my post my triple-trees are not OEM they are Accutronix. There is no pinch slot (just the recessed bolts that I did remove) and there are no bolts on the top. I believe they are threaded into the top tree from the bottom. Thanks again-I can only hope someone is familiar with Accutronix and a method to remove the tubes.

Yep--smooth top with the "pincher" screws on the back of the lower tree. I just did notice it appears the screws I removed secure a rectangle shaped piece that mounts flush with the surface of the tree. The rectangular piece is threaded with a larger hole size that allows the bolt I removed to pass through to a second threaded hole. It appears the rectangular piece is what secures the tubes and possibly removed by installing a bolt in the first threaded hole and pulling it out to release the tubes, but not sure. I did try a strap wrench to no avail but based upon the aforementioned there is some reason for this design and makes sense that it serves as a wedge. I am just not sure or what I need to do to release the flush piece to determine if it will release the tubes. Since they were installed by the dealer I am not sure, but it has to be something simple. Someone here must be familiar with style of Accutronix trees. Thanks, Al

don't know if this is the style you have or not but may be made the same. look in the near hole of the bottom tree and you will see a square groove which would indicate to me that there may be some kind of "dog" that fits into a slot on the fork leg and locks it into place. that, along with the leg being threaded into the upper tree may be the situation. just a thought.

may also be (2) set screws per leg, (1) acting as a jamb screw. take it all the way out and you may find another screw under it.

The link you attached looks like mine except I only have two button head screws near the neck not four. Secondly. I have a rectangular piece on the back side of the lower tree behind the tubes with a recessed bolt. I removed this bolt thinking the rectangular piece acts as a lock but it will not come out. It is threaded with a larger hole where the bolt i removed passes through to smaller threaded hole which appears to draw the rectangular piece in to to lock the tube. Maybe a hacksaw or a little C-4 might do it.

I have the same trees and like Woodbutch said you will need a strap wrench and put a wedge in the pinch slot. Good luck

I did notice in an alternate post "How To service front shocks" by Gas Man it appears he has the same tree by Accutronics. It is difficult to tell for sure if it is exactly the same vintage because it do not show a rear view but it is the exact same style. Gas Man, if you read this I would appreciate your insight.

Got it! FYI; after removing the recessed bolt I inserted and larger bolt in the first threaded hole in the rectangular piece that is a wedge. Used a bolt long enough I attached of cast pipe with a nut and washer on the end of the stock to create a slide hammer and popped the wedge out. One of the tubes turned out easily: however, still working on the second one. Used strap wrenches, channel locks on top of strap and cleaned tube with brake cleaner....still battling. Thanks to all .
