Dog let me down, Broke down!

Was on a nice ride and noticed the clutch lever was not fully releasing but was still working. Pulled up to a traffic light went to pull in the clutch and nothing, had to downshift and try and find nuetral but couldn't so I just hit the brake till it finally came to a slow roll and died. The cable feels like either it broke down by the transmission or something came apart in the clutch area. Any ideas? It has no tension on it whatsoever.

the cable that broke on me was a sudden thing and I knew exactly what it was. Your description is a bit different. Taking a guess, if the lever is slack, I'd say broke cable. Good luck!

One way to check is to adjust the clutch lever play at the cable adjuster. If you get some clutch pressure at the lever by adjusting the cable adjuster then its going to be the clutch hub nut has came loose. If you loosen the cable adjuster all the way and can pull the cable out you know its a broke cable.

Thanks for the info guys. When I get home I will pull the cover and look and see what I find. Hopefully it's just the nut came loose.

Update, The nut was tight and the cable is not broke. The inner and outer ramp plates are worn and causing the bearings to come out and on top of the flate area of the plate causing the clutch to pop and then not work. I have all the parts out and heading up to see Tim at Gateway Big Dog to get some parts. the bike has just 5400 miles on it so I'm not sure why those are worn like that.

I got the parts and from what Tim told me, The reason the bearings were coming onto the flat part of the plate was because no one had adjusted the rod, they just adjusted the cable over time and never did the rod. I went ahead and purchased the easy ramp plates and clutches with a new rod and lock nut. If all goes well it should be back on the road in a couple of days.

Update, The bike is all back together and just wanted to update everyone on what was found. The clutch was loose, which is actually the cause of the clutch not working. We found this when we went to replace the clutch assembly, it was backed pretty much all the way out. We went ahead and installed the new easy pull clutch, new shaft and easy pull clutch cams. I will say that I love the new easy pull set up. It is so much easier and smoother. I'm glad I had some friends to help as I'm not a motorcyle mecheanic but I learned so much in doing this. I feel like now I could do all the work myself next time. Thanks for all the comments on this thread.

Awesome news ArnoldDog... mine is doing the same thing and I'm going to tear into it tomorrow to see if the nut is loose or something else is causing the problem.
