Difficulty shifting into second from first

Went out for a great ride yesterday with a group of ten bikes spanning Missouri and Illinois :whoop:. However, near the end I was having trouble getting the bike to shift into second gear from first. Any ideas what could be causing this? It was a hot freakin' day but wouldn't think that had anything to do with it. As always, thank you for the expertise.

How many actual miles are on the transmission? Any oil leaks if you look underneath?
Could be just a simple clutch adjustment, Hyme Joints on shift linkage might be sticking, or worse case, bearings in transmission are worn.

Andrew, thank you for the reply.

I have never had any issues with the bike or the transmission, shifting, oil leaks, etc. And as I don’t get to ride as much as I’d like (three children), there are only 3,500 miles on the bike. At first I thought I just didn’t lift hard enough on the shifter the first time, but then it did it again a few more times when I was consciously making sure I lifted hard on the shifter. It would go the second time I lifted on it but not until it went into neutral first (and they say neutral’s usually so damn hard to find on these bikes). Anyway, just a little concerned as I know this can’t be normal.
Is the clutch adjustment difficult for a novice to handle? How about the process of working on the Hyme joints of the shift linkage? As the mileage is so low I would sure hope there's nothing wrong with the transmission bearings.

Shifter pawl adjustment might check. Look it up. Good to know.

Yes your right, bearings should be ok.
Shift linkage is easy to check. Just grab hold of it and see if it moves back and forth easy between your fingers. If Hyme joints are tight and hard to move by hand, most likely that's the problem. If you have the original type with plastic inserts inside joint, it might be binding more when hot.
There should be a thread on here if you search clutch adjustment.
The eccentric adjuster for shift paw should not need adjusting unless the nut has backed out.
