I know its not big dog related. But I need a rear axle for the bike I am building. What type of steel are they usually made of? I have a friend with a lathe but I need to know what steel I need. It is 1" axle 18 1/4 long if that helps. Thanks

Axles are typically made from SAE grade 41xx steel or SAE grade 10xx steel. SAE grade 41xx steel is commonly known as "chrome-molybdenum steel" (or "chrome-moly") while SAE grade 10xx steel is known as "carbon steel".

8620 is typically carbonized and hardened and threads need to be machined after hardening with ability to get up the 60's Rockwell "C".

The 41XX materials can be purchased as pre hardened usually in the mid 30's and can still be easily machined. A 4140 or 4150 would be my preference.

Knotheads use of Stainless isn't a bad idea either.
