Cruise mate installation

Has anyone installed a cruise mate on their big dog?
Thinking about putting one on my 2009 ridgeback.
I see there is a threaded hole on the bottom side of my control but it’s awful close to the split in the two pieces. It’s about the size a hole that HARLEY‘s use for ther thumbscrew. I know I’ll have to drill out a bigger hole to install it but like I say it looks awful close to the seam between the 2 half’s. I see Derek And Donna have a kit to do it with the drill bit / tap and drill jig. But that hole that’s already in there being so close to the edge worries me.

I was just concerned because that jig to install looks like it has a plastic insert and with that threaded hole already being there that it would try to make my drill bit walk off. i did not know if that was a factory hole or if the guy that had the bike before had put that in there and used a old style thumb screw from a Harley-Davidson on it. I have installed a cruise mate on a old school chopper that I built but the split in the control was horizontal instead of vertical so it only went through the bottom half and didn't go through the split.
I went to the doctor 6 weeks ago because my fingertips and my toes were numb all the time and I thought it was due to a pinched nerve which has happened before many years ago when I was in the army. Well come to find out I have stage 2 diabetes. He put me on one 500 mg pill of metformen a day and cut my carbs down and thankfully that problem has went away no more numb fingers and toes (( YA !!!! )) He also assures me that if I stick with this diet after 6 to 8 months I won't have to take the medication anymore. But now after riding for a 1/2hr or so my hand goes numb. If I pull over for a coupe of minuets and flex my hand it goes away then I am good for another 1/2hr or so. He also assured me that that will go away in 6 to 8 months. But I'm not waiting for that I'm going ride LOL. That's when I remembered the cruise mate on my old school chopper. I was just concerned with the split in the control but it sounds like that is factory hole so I'm gonna go in and order one from Eric Derek and Donna right now
Thanks for the input guys

Do yourself a huge favor and drop about 20-30lbs. I have been right where you are now. They had me on that crap for 6yrs. It was worse then the type 2. Type 2 can be "managed" as they like to say. Its still gonna kill ya slow. Losing toes, liver, sight.....Look into REVERSING type 2. It can be done but drs wont push it cause.... $$$. Jm .02 Holler if ya need to.

This is what i order and i have them in 3 bikes of mine...and yes its just a plug and play nothing else needed....only thing is you may have to do is remove the rubber gasket inside the headlight housing so it will fit right....Screenshot_20210617-071505_Amazon Shopping.jpg

Awesome info. I am wanting to change mine out also.
Also when installing the new headlight I would put a dab of silicone on the flat surface where it fits up inside the bucket to keep the headlight from spinning cause of vibration....if you dont it will spin some

I'm with you Brother in six weeks and two days I have went from 258.7 lbs to 205.4 lbs. they want me down to190 lbs. My glucose readings have went from almost 325 two a average this month of 87 and my high this month was 112.
Yup things have changed a little bit over the last few weeks. My doctor has got me seeing a dietitian and a diabetes expert ( thankfully I have really good insurance ) they put me on a 150 to 200 carb diet per day. ( I am trying to staying around the 150 mark ) My problem was I didn't just have one chicken breast on the grill a little potato salad and vegetables. I'd have three or four pieces of chicken a huge pile of tater salad the baked beans and all the other side dishes that goes with it LOL. I have no problem eating the stuff that's good for me I just always ate way too much of everything ( I never found a carbohydrate that I didn't like LOL ) so yeah I got this no problem. Well i shouldn't say that the problem i had at first was finding the right stuff that I could eat by counting the carbs sugars etc. So I went to Barnes and noble and bought 7 diabetes cookbooks and that made all the difference in the world. Now I have literally thousands of recipes. I have tried a couple of dozen of them and so far I've only found one that I didn't like . What's great about these books it gives you all the nutritional information with each recipe and you don't have to count carbs / sugars and fats no more. Yeah there all telling me that I can REVERSE this and believe you me that's what I'm going for. Instead of reaching for a bag of chips or a candy bar or blueberry muffin for a snack I grab a big dill pickle or a peeled cucumber or a apricot or some baby carets and I'm a happy camper. I have always liked that stuff anyway.

Hey LHS - How did that Cruise-Mate install go for you?
Been thinking about putting one on my Mastiff but can't seem to find one now. Anyone out there have any ideas on where to get one?

Hi TexasMike
The install was pretty much straightforward / really simple.
The only regret I got is I didn't do it sooner LOL
I ordered the Cruise-mate from HDM INC / bigdogpartskingpin. I spent a little bit extra money to get the jig which came with the Jig drill bit and tap. I really didn't need the drill bit and tap but it comes with the jig. It's worth the extra money as it keeps your drill bit in line and will not allow it to drift off and screw up your control housing. You can do yourself a favor when disassembling your control housing and lay an old blanket or something similar on the floor underneath it as more than likely you will drop one of the 2 tiny brass ferrells for your throttle and idle cables and those little suckers just disappear on your shop floor. I wound up losing one of mine and having to order another one and at the time HDM was out of them so I ordered it from the original manufacturer of the big dog cables and wound up with a pack of 10 of them Iol.
I have had mine for over a year and I love it don't know how I went so long without one.

Keep in mind this is not an electronic cruise control it is a friction lock for your throttle grip. As road conditions change you will have to reach up and move your throttle to maintain speed but it does allow you to relieve having to hold your throttle and give your hand And wrist a break.

As LHS mentions it was a very good move. I installed one a couple of years ago and it was relatively simple, it makes for the long trips on the dog more comfortable.
