CRANKCASE MARBLES

Brian, I am assuming the photo is of the bushing in the cam cover and the end of the cam. It appears that the bushing may be the cause of your noise. If so, its time for a new cam and bushing. That would be a lot better than the crank bearing and a full tear down.
When I put the end of the cam in the bushing, I noticed there is a tiny amount of play between the two. The manual calls for using a bore gauge to measure the inner diameter of the bushing but unfortunately, I do not have one. May have to run by the Harley shop and see if they will measure it and if bad, swap out to a new bushing.

would think the problem is the inner cam bearing
Me 2, and even more. The bushing is going to show those groves if the Cam Needle Bearing assembly has failed. Which failure is causing the cam to move up and down. On the other hand if it sounds like a bag of Marbles you may want to look at the Left and Right main bearing assembly. Which leads to a total tear down of the motor. If the Noise is coming from the bottom of the motor I would say Main bearing assembly and or Cam Needle Bearing. That is my two cents.

Good Luck

Definitely have signs of excessive cam play based on your bushing pic. Obviously can't have play in the inner needle bearing or bushing. Everytime a lobe pushes up a lifter will cause cam to take up play and pound the bushing. I hope that's the extent of your issues. Good luck!!!

If it's the cam and you're running a stock cam (I think a .585) I have one that came out of my '05 you're welcome to have.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU to BadBrad for hooking me up with a free cam!!! Tried to pay the fella but he wouldn't even let me get the shipping. Goes to show how kick-ass the members are on this forum by willing to help out thier fellow riders. I did however make an arangement that if I'm ever out his way, the beer and strippers are on me! :D Thanks again Brad...rep points are comming your way!!!

Glad I could help. We're both putting our bikes back together this week. I'm waiting on a clutch basket. Should be in Friday. Good luck with the cam. Make sure you get the right size cam spacer/washer installed behind the cam so your tolerance is within specs. The endplay should be between .005 and .015. You can buy a cam washer kit with about 7 or 8 different sizes from J&P or most anyone. I may have to take a road trip to CA just to take you up on that beer/stripper offer. Good luck Brian.
