Compression release question

I've searched and can't find the ans to this one probably because everyone but me already knows the ans. I'm not sure that my compression releases always work. When it's a cold start, can I push down on the rubber boots in the center of the rocker covers to manually engage them? And if I do that, if it works, do I have to hole them down while I crank? I know that they are electronic; but, wondering if I can also do them manual to be sure that they are working. I've got the '06 K-9, carbed 117.

Many of us push them in manually before starting the bike. They are spring loaded so just push them in and start your bike. Remember to keep you throttle closed when starting.

Thanks
I got a starter stall the other day on a cold start for the first time. I'm on batt tender all the time so I don't think it's a weak batt. I'll check connections. When I turned the key off and then tried again, she kicked over and started. No more problems the rest of the day. That's why I asked the question about engaging the compression releases manually at least for cold starts.

AAAhhh yes. I remember the first time I tried to start my bike without having the throttle fully closed. It sounded like the biggest shotgun blast I had ever heard. Had a few neighbors come out to see who got kilt.:bang:
