Compression buttons

I know these are high compression engines and like to kill batteries and starters. My question is ..... Is there a year where they went to automatic decompression? My buddy has an 02 pitbull with buttons on the outside you have to push down. If you forget to push them down it is extremely difficult to start and if it doesn't start right away it will kill the battery. I have noticed that not all big dogs have these buttons so did they go automatic with the start button at some point?

Where, exactly, are those buttons on his bike? My 02 pit is so tight between the motor and frame, it's almost impossible to shine the top of the rocker covers.

They are on the left side near the top of the head next to the bolts.(close to spark plug)
I have also seen them mounted in the top of the head but like you said it is tight and hot after running.

So let me be clear, 06 K9, I always thought mine were manual. Center of the rocker box are the buttons down in the hole, when I press them it rolls over easy and when I don't it struggles.

Replace them, I just replaced mine a few weeks ago, same problem as you are having, even thought they work when activating, my rear one was closing when the compression came up in that cylinder.
I ordered them and the rocker box gaskets, it makes it really easy to change them when removing the rocker boxes. Without removing the rocker boxes, you can get the wires fed thru the heads but there's a tube to protect the wires until they clear the head which is a SOB to work thru there, I had a very very slight leak in the rocker box gaskets so that's why I removed them to do the compression releases.
I ordered them thru my local shop that I sometimes work at and he also had the 2 piece tool needed to install them unless you modify a deep socket with a hole for the wire to come thru, 35ft/lbs torque
with anti seize on the threads. It will start like its a bran new spanker:whoop:

They are automatic. When you turn the key on they open. When the motor gets to about 500 rpm they close.

Some custom builders like to keep it simple - no extra wires - nothing to fail - will install manuals. You have to tap into the head near the plugs as you described. You push them down before you start the bike, then they close when compression builds up. I know Eddie Trotta uses them on all his bikes.
