For those of you who do your own service, anytime you have the primary cover off, it would be a good idea to check the diaphragm spring attitude.
Per the service manual, spring attitude should be between .010-.050". If the sppring attitude exceeds that they recommend the measurement of the clutch plates.
I have found on several occasions that although the pack height is in spec the spring attitude is in excess of .060". Oil sample analysis revealed excessive aluminum in the primary fluid (in excess of 999 ppm. since the aluminum pressure plate is in contact with the friction plates, it is wearing resulting in the changing of the spring attitude.
Since there are no shims available to correct the spring attitude, the only way I could bring the spring attitude back into spec was to replace the pressure plate.
Upon measuring the thickness of the worn pressure plate, I found that there ws significant wear on the plate (more than .020"). These bikes were older bikes with 20,000+ miles on them and not ridden aggressively according to the module downloads.
Ever notice how black the primary oil gets? The recommended change interval for primary oil is every 5,000 miles.
Since oil is cheaper than clutches, you might want to replace your primary oil everytime you replace you engine oil.:zz2cents:
