Clutch Choice

Well, if the Baker clutch for the post 2005 is the same one as I have in my 2009 Mastiff, don't waste your money. 2500 miles and I am on my 2nd one and while it's much better than the 1st one, it is still weak. Get a Bandit and find the ball and ramp parts separately.

It looks as though there are two clutches available from Baker, one 9 plate street performance and a 9 plate King Kong Klutch. Which one did you put in your Mastiff?

Thats why I was asking earlier how many plates are on the stock clutches.

Ok, so Barnett does not offer a clutch for the 2005 and up models. Baker does, but it also includes the ball and ramp assy. Anyone installed a Baker clutch on theirs?

I think that is what you have in your bike now.

According to Baker...The clutches that come on the '05 and newer modles are a 12 plate clutch with Big Dogs proprietory ring design which makes the clutches themselves unique to BD builds. So, Baker does not advertise an aftermarket clutch for that reason. Below is the response I got:





"The clutch is similar to the street performance clutch. Because of Big Dog’s ring gear configuration, our BAKER 9 plate street performance clutch will not work. Instead, we make a 9 plate clutch with the correct ring gear but don’t advertise it with our other clutches as it is a Big Dog only design.



The difference in the 9 plate clutch and the stock clutch that comes in an 05-newer Big Dog is the different number of plates in the clutch. The stock clutch is a 12 plate, this one is a 9 plate. The 9 plate is good for about 125 ft/lbs and has an easier pull on the lever than the 12 plate.

Interesting but what I don't understand is the ring gear? I think they are referring to the starter ring. That's not part of a clutch pack so.......... They also didn't state that THEY don't make the 12 plate clutch for BDM.
I have personaly asked Bert about the primary cover. We can't us a Baker as the bolt pattern is different than the BDM. Don't know why BD does that :loony:

But I imagine the 9 plate unit is what they put in my bike and it is very easy to on the clutch hand and it stupid easy to shift in and out of gear without the clunk!

Not sure about the ring gear...unless they use a one piece basket/ring gear design or something.
