Clanking?

Hi guys. I have a 2006 Pitbull. 7500 miles. I am having what I can only describe as a "clanking" sound coming from somewhere around my tank, or the front end. It is most noticeable if I hit some bumps. I get a quick "clank clank clank clank" Any ideas?

First thing I would say is to check your dust caps on the forks and make sure they are tight and as Rub said too.

Definitely something loose, start from the front end, work your way back grab hold of things try to move them, might sound stupid but get a rubber mallet hit your front tire. Might get the part to "clank".

yep check tank rubber mounts.. 2 rubber bushings on the frt above the frt rocker box & 1 on top of the back bone in rear..

Just a thought,while checking other suggestions,check the front exhaust,maybe not sitting right or tight.

just a thought.. I had a mystery clank that turned out to be the retaining ring for the headlight that came loose.

isnt there an in the tank metal vent tube thingy that has been known to break free inside the tank ?

Guys, thanks so much for the suggestions. I will do all of them! I did check the dust caps and they seem tight. I did just change my clutch cable and had to take off the exhaust. That is about the same time I started hearing the clank. I love the idea of hitting the tire with a mallet to recreate the clank. My tank does "seem" loose. I can certainly move it left and right but figured that was normal. Thanks again guys and any more ideas are greatly appreciated. I'll let you know if I figure it out!

If you are moving the tank left and right it's the tank for sure. Should not be moving

It is definitely the tank. It is getting worse and with your guys suggestions, I have narrowed it town to a loose tank. It has actually started squeaking a little to. Def the tank. OK, anyone know what tools I need to tighten? It looks awful cramped up there to tighten the front ones, let alone the rear.

well the question is did it just come loose or are the rubber bushings worn out or cracked? All you need is a driver from a socket set. I believe it may be a 1/2", but others who are sure will chime in. I would take a look at the rubber bushings and make sure they are slipped over the metal carrier right if so you just put the driver on in the center part of the carrier and just turn it a half turn or so to lock in to the indents on the tank itself. There is also a rubber bushing under the tank near the bottom that could be dry rotted as well. Mine did. If so you will have to remove the tank completely to get to that one.
