Chrome Wheels

Quick question for the gurus out there: Anyone know if under the chrome on the wheels is billet? I contacted a guy locally (Tulsa) that says he has the dustless blasting and claims it won't harm the aluminum... Bought my newest mastiff from a guy and the wheels are chipping significantly and a large flake finally came off and it appears to be aluminum?

Granted, the issue doesn't slow down the dog... :) I'm trying to avoid the costs of having them redone. But if that is what it is, anyone know of a great chrome shop out there that will handle an 18 x 5 wheel? Might as well get he front done too.

Thanks for the info. I've been thinking about chrome after the last billet polishing day.......Good to see they have a standard price to get wheels chromed. i figured that has to be more chrome than everything else combined. One of these days......

Hi Tim,

I also use Sport Chrome the same one Paul is using. They do excellent work but are not cheap.

Thanks for the input fellas.

That is billet under the chrome though, isn't it? I have a large flake and it looks that way to me, but is discolored.

Back again. Anyone ever had to deal with removing the chrome from their wheels and/or fork lowers? Apparently its a big deal. No one around will blast them because of the billet underneath and they say it will warp the wheel? I can't afford to have them rechromed and to be honest, don't want to deal with flaking chrome again. Any thoughts?

Not sure if sport chrome has re opened. The last time I used them I received parts back that were damaged and there were imperfections with the chrome. I called sport chrome and spoke to them. They were having some issues with their process and they were relocating. The owner was willing to take care of the issue once they re opened and was willing to take care of the issue.
Not trying to slam sport chrome but just wanted to share. I have used them for years and never had a problem with their work and hopefully they fix the issues they were having

I once worked for a chrome shop in the early 70s. I remember a bad ass chemical (forget the name) but it would strip the chrome right off aliuminum. You didn't want to screw up putting any kind of mild steel in that tank, it would eat it. But for aliuminum it worked great, after that chemical process, the aliuminum was ready for polishing, or polished and replated, customers choice.

Did the name of the chemical come to you Jersey James?

To the best of my memory, it was called some kind of fuming acid, I know not much help. But like Mr. Wright said any chrome plating shop, should be in the know. And now 50 years later, probably new and improved methods...
