Checking Vin#

What is the best way to check into Vin# on used BD. I am looking to buy a used BD at some point and I know some of you have called BD directly to check.

What is the policy at BD? I am sure they don't want folks like me calling every dew days wanting the scoop on a used bike. What is the best way to go about doing this?

Gotta tell you. I am seeing some pretty funny stuff cruising the internet for a bike. Some sellers don't actually know what they are selling. Do they really think buyers are that naive??

Thanks in advance for the input.

What information are you looking for in the VIN? I have a break down of the VIN in my manual that shows what the numbers correspond to as far as model, year, production etc. Is that the info you are looking for?
If so I can scan it and post it.

Well that is a good point..not sure what I am looking for.:loony:

From what I've read here you can find out about warranty/recall work that might have been performed or not by a BD dealer. Could potentially drive up the cost of what you've really paid in the long run. If that makes any sense.

Just trying to become an informed buyer. I feel like I know more about BD bikes than my own metric after owning it for 9 years.

Until I found this forum I had to experiment with almost everything I did to the Dog. Now I can start a project with some knowledge.

The VIN information I have is just what the numbers mean and what models and year they represent. Someone on the forum may have access to a service record data base if they know someone at a BDM Dealership. If not contact BDM direct, they have helped me in the past with things specific to my 2004 Ridgeback. I sent them a request with the VIN for the House of Kolor paint numbers on my bike and they gladly sent me the details of all the paint and primer they used. They are really good to deal with.

The dealers do a down load each time a BDM is brought in for service. That information is sent to the factory. So I would assume the factory keeps the data.

Big Dog or a compentant dealer should be able to tell you if all recalls or updates have been done to a bike, with the Vin#. :hi:

Contact Anne Dixon at BDM if she is still there with the serial number and she will let you know if there are any unstanding recalls.

I second it on Anne Dixon, she helped me in Feb when I bought mine. She let me know all the recalls had been performed. She even sent me an owners manual of it after I bought it.

Ok thanks for all the responses. Once I narrow my list down to 5-10 bikes I will give BD a call.
