Checking oil?

Looked at the "How to thread". When I check my oil yesterday it wasn't on the dipstick "cold" , so I rode to my dad's to get some and when I got there it was full??? Looked it the tube and it was right to the top of where it enter rhe tank So today check it when I got home from work "cold" and it wasn't on dipstick and was low inside the tube. Do you check it hot or cold? Any info

Here is the 07 manual...Hope this helps...

CHECK OIL LEVEL (K-9, CHOPPER, MASTIFF)
The oil level should be checked when the engine is at normal
operating temperature, setting upright and level. First remove
the seat then remove the oil cap by unscrewing counterclockwise.
The oil level should be at the bottom of the filler
neck. When the motorcycle is on the kickstand, oil should be
between the min/max marks on the dipstick.
