Checking End Play on a new cam?

Ok Guys... finally I did pull the trigger and ordered a .585 cam :D

Now I need some help here, two things;

1. How do you check the end play? Any "How To" available? (I could not find any) Some pics would be great! (I have NO clue!)

2. Could someone, please, send me a link for those Shims/Washers? (I´ve been looking on the net but I end up very confused as there are different names, shapes & sizes! :confused:

Franko do you have the S&S Service Manual. That thing has pictures and cover everything you need to know about assembly and disassembly of the 4-1/8 Bore SSW + Engine. You can go to sscycles.com and see if you can order one. It sure comes in handy.

As for the shims get them from the cam provider, provided you need them. I have gone from Stock to the 600, then to the 650 and all clearances were within specs, did not have to use shims other than what was already in there.

As to how you check the end play, you have to install the new cam assemble the engine (install the cam cover) with new gasket tighten to 120 in /lbs and check the end play through the lifter bore. Turn the engine and check measure the end play in four different locations. The clearance can be be between 0.005 to . 0.015. Then you have to take the cam cover off put some gasket sealer on the cam cover gasket, or at least I do and torque it down to specs and you are done.

The one I want to carry is back ordered until who knows when so I am looking at building one in house specifically for the BDs.

I just measured with a vernier caliber, the distance on the new cam and compared it to the cam I took out, and it was within .001 from the other cam. Yes thats assuming it was put together right when it was built. I have over 12000 miles on the original cam so I'm going to assume its ok.

Like Curtis said get a manual and that way you can't go wrong. In answer to your question Yes. But you have to know where everything is located and how to install the cam, and bearings if need be. Make sure the markings stamped on the cam are in right position before you turn the motor. Line all the marking before you pull anything out and install in the reverse order. Do not turn that motor with the cam out or you will have bigger problems. Not that you won't be able to line it back up, but now you will have to line up the crank at TDC and it can get complicated if you have never taken a motor apart. Don't be scared, just be smart and it will all be good. :2thumbs: We will walk you through it if need be. wait for the manual :D

Franco--I get my cam shims from J&P Cycles .They have them in .005 increments, only takes a couple days. Good luck with your stuff!...Ron
