Cervical disc removal and fusion

Hi All, Three weeks ago I underwent Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion in order to repair three ruptured discs in my neck (OUCH:eek:)!!! I was just wondering if anyone here has had a similar surgery and if so, how long was it until they were riding again. Also, did you have any problems with turning to check for traffic etc. Thank you as I am itching to get back on my scooters.:(

John, I never had any surgeries like yours but I would like to wish you a speedy recovery. Good luck and listen to your doctors and do your therapy excersies.

I have discovered the older I get the longer it takes to recover from everything.

Good luck with your recovery and a year from now this will be "something" you did in the past. Good Luck:2thumbs:

Thank you for all of the replies and well wishes. The doctor told me he did not see any reason why I couldn't ride AFTER the fusion healed in approx 6 months. You guys are the BEST!!!!

Racing&T'type body x's 13 crashes. One begins to know a heal time under the sheets of blood, broken bones, burned off skin and scabs.

1. I have that opinion like an asshole as everyone has one so your doc is one opinion.
2. Shadup, quit your crying someone is worse off than you. Every time you feel that residual, I don't wanna hear it.
3. Never squirt your neck to adjust your pillow.
4. Never fall asleep at the monitor.
5. Takes at least a year to gain anything back.
6. Push and it hurts, it says back the fuck off don't go there.
7. Swim for exercise to gain neck strength.
8. Create your own type exercise to work the 'residual' out.
9. You damaged a crystal ball, that hump tea dump tee shot to the body is oh well, tap your heals twice and no joy back to OZ.
10. Read it an weep. Hey, what did I just say? 'There's no crying once leaving the bars,' or whatever your case was.

Signed,

NOLTT (Not One Turtle Tear) :flag: 'When Johnny comes marching home.' Your residual becomes minor. Yes or no?

John,

First of all wish you a speedy recovery. Secondly, I am having two vertabrae in my neck operated on the 1st of October (cervical spondylosis with myelopathy: spinal cord compression). Cadaver bones will be inserted due to my spinal cord being pinched by two of the vertabrae. I have been fighting numbness in my arms/hands and legs for a while now along with many unexplainable pains in my chest. The surgeon said I will loose about 15% mobility in my neck.
I am not planning on riding until the following Spring due to this operation. I will be in a neck brace for 2-3 weeks. I am currently trying to ride as much as possible now. I will miss out on the fall color tour this year. Fall is one of my favorite times to ride because I prefer not to ride in 80 degree plus weather.

Jeff,

Good luck with your surgery as well. I also had terrible pain radiating from my left shoulder down into my bicep. My left thumb was numb. After the surgery all of the pain cleared up. Like you, I had spinal cord compression at two disc sites. The surgery was a breeze and I had no pain. I had to spend the night at the hospital and received pain pills that evening. I did not need any more narcotic pain killers after I left the hospital and only relied on over the counter pain medication (tylenol). The doctor used composite spacers instead of bone. I also now have a titanium plate spanning three discs, secured with 8 screws. I did not require a collar but do have to wear a bone growth stimulator. You will do just fine!!!! Take care and thanks for posting.

I had same surgery in 08'. Three discs in my neck. 6 screws and titanium plates. Doc went in from the front of my neck. Used my hip bone for new discs. Was home in two days. Off work for 6 weeks. No problems so far whatsoever. Had to take it easy at first when I went to work with computer. Seems I got real dizzy very easily for a while. I am now 58 and have been riding an 08 hard tail Ridgeback since 08' ! (35,000 miles). Wore hard collar for week then soft most of time. Had good doc, he did a great job.:2thumbs:
