Carb question

What is the little rubber nipple on the back side of the carb. Mine is now dry rotted and needs to be replaced. What effect does it have on the carb? I will replace today. Just wondering if its sucking air and causing carb to run any different. Here is a pic

I don't know what that thing is either but I always keep it covered. They all dry rot, I just put a piece of shrink wrap over it with about 1/4" extra sticking up. Shrink it, fold it over, then put another piece over that.

Vacuum if you were runnin voes I think....any way like moe said keep covered...you can get those little vacuum plugs at any auto store...they rot out fairly often..and will make your carbrun diff....

Correct. Air vent nipple is for the VOES. If you have a spit or pop out of the carb, go looking for this boot to be split, where it bleeds a lean kind of running to it.

I replaced mine last year...went to Autozone and picked up a small pack that had different sizes in it...found the right size for my carb ...put it on and used a small black zip tie like what was on it :up:

yep first place to look for an air leak or lean condition...and you got to zip tie it on or the first sneeze or backfire it will be gone....

Something to know about this rubber nipple. If you dog backfires it will blow it off, or at least mine did and I could not get the dog to idle. My wife found in on the floor and asked what is this. Humm I put that sucker back on and the bike ran good after that. I now have a zip tie on it. Its a vacuum port, but don't know what it would apply too. Maybe the S&S IST ignition system, but don't know

Thanks for all post yep went to auto parts pick up a pack of five for $3. It did seem to have an effect on idle runs much smoother.
