CARBURETED UNITS- REMOVAL
1. Shut off the fuel valve.
2. Drain and remove the fuel tank (see
Chapter 2, Chassis).
3. Remove three 1/4-20 x 1" air filter cover
screws (75).
4. Remove air filter cover (76) and filter
element (77).
5. Loosen, but do not remove the three 114-
20 x 112" back plate screws (80) securing
back plate (81) to carburetor.
6. The back plate-to-head hardware assembly
consists oftwo 5/16-18 x 1-1/4" screws
(78), washers (79), spacers (83) and shims
(84) to allow proper back plate alignment.
Note the location of all parts, front to rear
for assembly.
7. Remove back plate to head screws,
washers, spacers and shims. Raise the
enrichener lever (85) to access one of the
screws.
8. Remove the 3/8" hose from the rear head
to the back plate.
9. Remove the back plate screws (80),
washers (142) and remove the back plate
from the carburetor.
10. Remove back plate gasket (11).
11. Drain the float bowl (124) by removing
brass plug (125) on bottom of carburetor
to avoid fuel spill.
12. Loosen screw clamp at carburetor inlet
and remove hose.
13. Loosen throttle and idle cable jam nuts at
right handlebar control and loosen adjuster
to provide maximum slack in cables for
removal from carburetor (see Chapter 2,
Chassis).

14. Remove throttle and idle cables from
carburetor.
15. Remove coil cover.
16. From left side of motorcycle, access the
two 3/8-16 x 1-1/4" screws (91) securing
carburetor throttle body (1) to manifold
(2) and remove carburetor.
17. Remove insulator block (4) located
between carburetor and manifold.
