Guys I have a carbureted 2008 Mastiff,

I have an intermittent problem with the emergency blinkers activating.
I know this means that the bike has a low battery or low voltage….But the problem is the batteries volts are always good (12.9) I got a new battery and checked it….IT’S not the battery

This issue is so intermittent. I can’t seem to figure out the cause and any solutions would be welcomed. The biggest problem is when I shut the bike off. If this problem happens I can’t start the bike. ( No control buttons work) I’ve already been screwed. The Start button won’t work. This problem has also happened in the middle of a ride and the bike keeps running …But I don’t have a horn , speedo, or blinkers.
( My emergency flashers …keep Blinking)

Has any body experienced this problem???

Have you had a look at the hand control boards? Think someone found a metal shaving found its way onto the board and was causing a short. Inspect and clean?

They are in the chrome units on the handle bars. Inside of them are circuit boards, moisture often play havick with them.

Hey Boris,

I am experiencing the same problem on my 06 K9 at the moment....here are the facts...

Installed a brand new EHC a week ago (there's a long story why I did not make the switch to wire plus)

Battery a little under 2 years old but load tests fine.

Riding along and the flashers suddenly activate while everything else on the speedo (Tach LEDs, odometer, oil light, neutral light, bright indicator) goes out......speedo needle flops down to 6 o'clock position......continue riding along and suddenly everything resets and is operational again....hit blinker to deactivate the flashers......this situation keeps repeating itself every 5 mins or so....different speeds different gears - not the result of any bumps in the road....When the speedo is out, there are NO lights at all on the EHC.....If the bike is turned off when speedo is out, it will not restart - no power to anything and no lights on the EHC......One thing I did notice is that the self-canceling feature of the blinkers was not functional when the speedo appeared operational....Got stranded the first night :bang:.....

Bike is now in the service center and they are waiting for BigDog to call them back....hopefully it doesn't take too long

Please keep us posted if you figure this out and I will do the same.

Good luck

Mobsta…no alarm

Dawgboy and Radams445…Thanks for your insight…I took apart both hand controls and cleaned the six pin connectors and the electric boards with a good electric spray cleaner. There were no visual problems or chips of metal on any of the boards…But the throttle side was full of grease for the throttle grip..I cleaned it with a de-greaser and then the electric cleaner. ..It was tricky to put back together…But I greased the throttle body sufficiently and kept the electronics clean.
So I ride all day yesterday and the bike worked flawlessly…I feeling great and think the issued was solved…
Well ......I jump on the bike this morning and drive to work……And the SAME ISSUE happens…Just as you described Dingo
BTW …we met at North Shore Motorcycles. I’ll send my number in a PM. I had that black 2008 Limited addition Mastiff.

Narrow37….Are you talking about the harness under the tank or buy the EHC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would say its the connection under the tank. pull the tank and fill all the connections with dielectric grease and put back together.

Narow 37....Figures you say that..."under the tank"
On the mastiff you need a special tool to take the tank off...It looks like the tank mount is pressed into rubber grommets.
But ....I was thinking along the same lines as you....Lets hope Dingo has a good answer from the shop his bike is in.
Thanks

No special tool required (unless your '08 model is different than my '07). I've had mine off before. Just use a socket drive extension.

Have you ever had the tank off? I've never heard of any special tools to remove the tank but I don't have an '08 either.

Dawgboy and BadBrad are correct, you do not need a special tool to remove the tank. Assuming you've drained the tank, remove the rear bolt on the tank bracket and loosen the front bolt. Insert a socket extenion on a rachet in the rear square and turn the bracket and the tank will be loose. You need to disconnect the transfer tube up front in order to remove the tank, be careful gas may come out. Very simple task...:2thumbs:

Brew454...Thanks for that info ....I never took my tank off. I only disconnected the tank bracket and slid it back when I installed a new speedo...I was told by a Big Dog mechanic that there was a special tool to take it off. Hummmm.....I guess he's wants work.....After reading your post I CLEARLY see and understand what your talking about. ...It sure seems like a very simple task to me....I'm praying when I get my tank off that there is a poor electric connection in my harness!
Thanks again

BTW: have any of you installed a wire plus module? If you did....Whats your thoughts of it? I got a feeling this problem is my EHC...yesterday when I turned my bikes key on ...The LED lights on my EHC Wouldn't go on...The blinkers blinked...No head light, No horn, No speedo.....And the start button was DOA. The battery tested 12.9

I haven't installed the Wire plus yet, but I do have one ready to go when the time comes. I hope you only have a loose connection also...

If my '05 WP is the same for an '08, then it's just time consuming. Get a quality pair of crimping pliers!!! The WP eliminates the snowball affect that the EHC poses. You may have something cut out, but it won't cause everything else to shut down like with the EHC. Well worth the money.

I have had my bike shut down and 4 ways blink. Computor protecting itself.
My hardest find was a water damaged circut board in left rear tail light.
The easist find was loose connections at the batt.
Look for the simplest things first. befor spending a ton of money at the shop.
Just my 2 cents.
Ps. I am still running my Big Dog ECM 2006 K9
