BIKE JUST SHUTS DOWN WHILE RIDING

Hello fellow Bigdog riders, I have a 2006 K9 and occasionally when I'm out for a ride the bike stop running. I pull over and the bike will crank, I have verified spark and fuel. about 15-20 minutes later the bike will start again and usually runs for a few miles then does it again. Any ideas on what it could be? I live in Montana and hasn't been very hot, 60's and 70's so I don't think it could be a temp issue and rides have been less than 30 minutes.

It may still be a temperaturerelated failure.
Drive around the block a few times but not long enough to fail
In your driveway
Get a fan, blow it toward the bike like you were riding.
Run the bike at 2000 rpm

If the bike craps out, its a temperature failure -- most likely culprit is the cam sensor. Try cooling just that and see if it restarts sooner (ice or cool garden hose pouring over cam chest (not spray so that you better isolate cooling).

I had the same problem with my 2007 K9. Had to replace the whole charging system. Stator, rotor, regulator. Never had a problem after that.

I agree with JBM and MW it is most likely the crank sensor. Unfortunately the only way to troubleshoot an intermittent part is by replacing it with a known good one. Good news is it's not too expensive and if it doesn't fix the problem at least you have eliminated one of the key parts. Also can't hurt to have an extra crank sensor in your tool box.

In my experience the crank sensors either work or don't.
Next time it happens pull over safely without doing anything, No key off nothing except putting it in neutral.
Pull the seat off and look at the EHC.
Is it all lit up, completely dead
If it is active and normal then look at the ignition module, is the power up LED lit or dark?
The above will help us troubleshoot with you more,

I'm in Billings. Been riding my Mastiff since valve seat in my car dropped out and sent wrist pin/con rod through #3 cylinder wall. Sucked riding in -15 temps and 14 in of snow.

I had issues with my Mastiff playing dead but mine was different than yours. My Mastiff would backfire lose all power and oil pressure light would be dimly lit even with key turned off and removed from bike. Mine was simply battery connections vibrating loose. Did lock tight on bolt threads to keep them tight.
