Welcome from Kansas. Your best bet for performance will be the stock aircleaner. Other stuff looks cool but not so great performance wise. Check to see if the bowl vent screw has been removed. (14) If not, remove it. Stock will need the screw replaced.Just picked up an '07 K9 with a 117. It came with a spike air cleaner and spits and sputters. What is the recommended air cleaner for these Big Dogs?
Thanks HMAN. I read about the float screw (14) on this site so I removed it but it still doesn't run right. I noticed the rubber boot for the fuel pump(?) rod on top was broken. Really didn't think anything of it. I'll replace it!Also check it the rubber caps are still on the top of the carb.
Like Rottweiler said, check or just replace the 2 rubber caps on top of the carb. They will dry rot suck air n make the bike run like crap. Or do as John Sachs suggests. Thanks HMAN. That is part of breather system on the 4 1/8" bore engines. They are vacuum breathers. The front hose goes from the manifold to the front head. That puts a vacuum in the rocker boxes and engine block. The rear breather line goes from the rear head to the air cleaner. It should have a one way check valve in it. That valve closes as soon as the engine starts and produces vacuum. If they look cracked, it's a good idea to replace them. While on the subject of cracked hoses, do you know what the hoses are for that run under the valve covers? I have one that runs to a breather and the one on the front head goes to the carb. The front hose looks cracked and needs replaced.
That is exactly what I have and with the check valve! Is there a need to pull that off sometime and make sure the check valve is not sticking or something that would indicate I should watch for? They usually don't go bad. If you are concerned, you can pull the valve out and check it. You should be able to blow through it one way, but not the other way. Make sure it is in the correct direction. The valve will let pressure out of the engine, but won't allow air into the engine. That is exactly what I have and with the check valve! Thanks! It has Vance and Hines pipes and they are pretty loud. Don't see any baffles unless they placed them at the joint? I am going to ask the previous owner if he has the original air cleaner or if it came with the spike (he was second owner). I also have this dual snorkel with a K&N filter I may look at some day but the long tube dual runners look sweet. Reminds me of the high rise intakes for cars that were torque adders. The first thing I would do is replace the dry rotted rubber. The spike air cleaner is a little restrictive but it shouldn’t cause it to run bad. If you want a better one use the stock one or try and find a S&S dual runner. Best for air flow but you need to upgrade the exhaust. Does no good to get more air in if you don’t get more air out

Best I've found is the groved teardrop air cleaner cover, with an extra wide element. Proven many times on the dyno.![]()
