Rode about 30 miles yesterday and pulled over and noticed half my drive belt was gone and shredding as I was riding. Limped her home but now need to a new belt. Think the seal on the opposite side is shot to because of tan colored greease/oil spattered on the brake disc. Interesting day.

I noticed that my rear wheel on the belt side had a lot of black smeary greasy junk on it. I thought that the seal on the clutch rod had bitten the dust. My belt was chewed a little on the tips on the side away from the tranny.I took the clutch ball ramp assy apart to look for the source of the black grease and it has high temp wheel bearing grease which is red. The crap on the wheel was melted belt material. I tried to align the wheel to get the belt to track properly. I ran it a 1/4" out of square and it would still not track back toward the transmission. The belt pulley lock nut was worn where the socket head cap screws are supposed to retain it. As it turns out the splines on the pulley were deformed, flattened, on the driven side. This had the net effect of increasing the inside diameter of the pulley approx 1/32". This allowed the pulley to cock slightly and hence the belt runout problem. I did not feel this play until I took the belt off of the sprocket. I ordered a new one from Baker as BD is about 6 to 12 weeks on backorder. Supprisingly the same part from BD was $68 and $176 from Baker. Go figure. I would look at this area if I had belt problems. 9700 miles on K9. If it changes in diagnosis when I get the part I will update this post.

KLRDOG, Check those wheel bearings also for looseness or binding, or noise.:job: You may have bearing going bad also.

Dealer says the bearings were shot causing the belt to go out of alignment and shred. They put it back togetehr test rode it and grease is still leaking from the replaced bearing area. He is taking it apart again tuesday and calling big dog to get specs on spindle and a few other things. Also he took apart the front belt sprocket and re tightened it with super thread locker. Mechanic doesnt like the fact that the rear bearing it still leaking grease and I agree it shouldnt either. Hope he can figure it out without costing me an arm and a leg...

$176 vs $68, quite a difference I would say. I had been looking for a new trans pullley and noticed that Bakers prices were high. Their products are not that great either. I would like to get another tranny for my bike, as I do not like the baker 6. There has to be something out there that is better.

Same thing happened to me a few k miles ago. But I know exactly what happened...picked up rock when rounding a corner onto an on-ramp. Literally shredded 3/4 of my belt away. Almost immediately too! Amazingly, no damage to gear teeth. But decision to continue on next few miles to destination then baby 30 or so back home literally toasted my rear bearings!

Still, kinda suprising how strong these belts are! Literally, I didn't even have a 1/4" left, and I STILL made it home!!!

So is that what the dealer charged you?
What did they say about your bearings leaking?

I'm curious how many miles did you get out of your rear tire?

They replaced the bearings. Then replaced 1 again that they think was bad even though it was new. Ya dealer charged that...im guessing about 5 hours labor into it maybe more. they took it apart a few times . My rear tire was replaced at 3k miles becasue something went wrong with it. I have 7400 miles on this one and it seems fine.
