Belt Driven Primary

You will also need to remove a collar off the trans input shaft. I think it will tell you to do this in the instructions, but I believe there was a spacer that stays. It's been many years since I put on on, or even had the clutch out of it. Go back to page 1, and reread post 8, and look at the pictures. Between that and your instruction sheet, you should be able to figure it out.

okay i double check but on mine i didn’t see a collar there was just a shaft coming out then machined down to the splines I’ll take a second look when i go to measure the shaft

You will like it. I had to replace the outer support bearings once. Make sure you get that different jack shaft. That was the only problem I had with it. I sent you my number, feel free to call me if you have more questions. I have to get off here now.

To me it looks like the washer on the inner hub is the stop for the clutch basket like it’s supposed to stop the basket from sliding on any further. If i drill it out like you guys did there is nothing for the basket to bottom out on other than the aluminum inner primary plate hitting on the outer clutch basket

Any of you run an Ultima belt driven primary on a Ridgeback? If so how do you like it? Im thinking of putting a 3" on my 04 but a buddy of mine is telling me it will be too big and drag in corners etc. He says no wider that 2". What do you guys think?
I have an 05’ Ridgeback and run the Baker open belt primary with no problems. I believe it runs a 2 3/4” belt. It’s specifically designed for our bikes but it’s very expensive.

Worthwhile to mention this thread is back in 2004 and OP was talking about an 04 Rigid. I'm guessing he never went through with it either way I figured I share some information.

Well I have that model and since I've owned it for 8 years, I've always wanted an open primary and I've looked far and wide and there are some caveats specific to the 04 rigid which makes it a very cumbersome process.

The difference between an 03-04 BDM chopper and the 04 rigid is the inner primary offset. The 03-04 runs a more common 1.5" offset whereas the 04 rigid is 1-7/8". Only big dog year and model with that inner primary offset.

So even the ones that fit an 03-04 chopper won't fit the 04 rigid. A few companies used to make open primaries with the 1-7/8" offset however after the chopper revolution died down they dropped it as its uncommon frames. So even BDL makes a 1.5" still but not a 1-7/8".

Another obvious observation here is if anyone thinks they can replace the inner primary on their 04 ridgeback BigDog with one from a chopper, it won't work either.. Lol

I got it all together took it out on the road today and smoked the inner primary plate bearing in 1/2 mile i think i put to much on the trans main shaft nut. Paperwork says 45-55 ft lbs and i tightened it up hard with 1/2” impact oops.... my old setup i have had off a few times and always ran it up hard with loc tite. I guess a 13 dollar bearing isn’t the end of the world but now i have to take it back apart and put it back together lol. I actually used spacers to space the outer clutch basket out instead of having the hub machined but realized after it was together i then had to space out the started shaft cover too. Now that it’s apart I’m gonna have my buddy bore the inner hub to .987 an additional .250 in towards the splines to get the hub to slide all the way on. The .987 is the in side diameter of the inner primary backer plate bearing. So it should slide on all the way and close the gap i measured at .230

I have 2004 Bull Dog and looking to run a belt drive set up and found out it has 1/2 offset and looking at the primary cover on my 2004 Bull Dog and my 2004 H/D fat boy the primary's look the same accept for the 1/2 back plate on the Bull Dog by the engine. So looking for the Karata Back plate if anyone has one.
Or what does everyone else run if they have a 2004 Bull Dog
