BDM Stable?

Energy One

Updated -= I'm sure that I'm not telling "new news" to anyone here... but Sheldon Coleman is looking to sell BDM and has hired William Blair to find him a buyer.

This could be good news although I am a big fan of how Coleman build BDM. I just want to see the company survive this economy - if they can hang on another year they'll make it several more.

The new Chopper is cool - priced nice - and could certainly boost sales.

I searched Google and this site for information on BDM's stability and didn't find anything newer than June of '09.

Does anyone have any recent "scoop" on BDM and whether they are stable or not?

I have a buddy who worked for Ironhorse here in DFW and he's back on his feet... finally.

Any info would be appreciated.

Mobsta - thanks. It was the thread with the new sub 20K chopper that got me to wondering... there was a mention of BDM's stability on that - so I got to looking.

I just couldn't find anything more recent than last summer on it...

Maybe the new "cheaper chopper" is a good sign?...

Well, lets see:
They just came out with a new low priced chopper model.
New Big Dogs are just now arriving in the UAE at a dealership.
More BDM bikes are being distributed to new dealers in Europe.
Several new dealers have opened up in Canada in the last 6 months.

Gotta say it looks good.:flag:

Fair enough - that's all good news.

I can't imagine having to spend 30 bucks to fill up my Dog like they do in Europe!

Thanks guys

You're dreaming....they are losing money hand over fist. I can't imagine them making any money for quite some time. Hopefully they ride the roller coaster out and realize the good with the bad. :2thumbs:

I may be dreaming, but the fact is they are expanding into new markets and that could pay off very well in the long run.

Case in point, my other hobby is sand rails. Now this market is very much in the same state of affairs as the high end motorcycle sales are here in the USA. Yet, the few buggy companies to get into the UAE are seeing their sales go up quite a bit. Now, those that get in first potentialy stand to do very well when the economy turns, and it will turn.

No one knows for sure, but I would rather look at this as a positive and be optimistic.

Sheldon is smart enough to know that the outlook here will not get better anytime soon...probably not for a few years at least. He is focusing on expanding the brand into other markets (as opposed to hibernating), where disposable income is not such an issue. No, it may not be like our heyday was, but at least there is some economic stability elswhere, and some demand for Big Dogs. He is getting in at the right time.

I would call it brilliant. The fact that the company is still alive at all (compared to damn near everyone else) is remarkable, and truly shows how dedicated he is to the brand ,as well as what a talented businessman he is.

He could have easily called it a day, shut the doors and gone to play golf.
NOPE...the man has a plan, and you have to admire that!

My local dealer (R&B Cycles) is doing good, and turning over inventory pretty regularly. That's gotta be a good thing.

I'm sure like most companies, BDM just needed to "re shift priorities" to endure the long run.

Big Dog Motorcycles Hires William Blair To Seek Sale
12/16/2009
The owner of Big Dog Motorcycles LLC, Sheldon Coleman, said on December 15 that he is looking to sell all or part of the company. Coleman has engaged William Blair & Co. to seek strategic options, including merger with another company, issuing more stock to a new investor and a sale of the company or its assets. The company has lost money the past two years; Coleman said and no longer has the capital to finance growth. "It is important that the company have a fresh infusion of capital to really be able to participate in a rebounding economy," Coleman said. The company is selling down the inventory in its warehouse and would call in some workers from furlough only to make new ones if it got an order that couldn't be filled from the warehouse. But in spite of the current crisis, Coleman appeared to be interested in the long term. He said he would like to be part of the company as the economy and sales revive, depending on the financial agreements reached with new investors.

Not sure if anyone saw this on Big Dogs face book page:

"Big Dog Motorcycles
Bobby, Michael and Jeff,

I frequently hear the same rumors/concerns.

Big Dog continues to introduce new models, open new international markets and bring on new dealers. Logically, this would be a fooish use of capital and energy if we felt that we were simply going under anytime in the near future.

We are publically seeking additional investment capital to insure that we can safely navigate our way through this challenging economy and continue serving our family of Big Dog owners.

I have absolute confidence that Big Dog Motorcycles is here to stay.

Thank you for your comments and allowing me the opportunity to address the pink elephant in the corner of the room. :)

Sounds like good news...but could just be trying to save face.
